Psycho-stimulants for depression-only?

Posted by paulbwell on November 24, 2004, at 23:22:24

Hi
I am wondering if anyone uses Stimulants for depression only. I have taken 5 AD's, and the most effective anti-depressant I have taken is Methylphenidate. I know in 2004 that it is illegal for Docs to prescribe MOST of the time,(for depression alone) althought you (and Doc) could always *claim* it is being used for ADD. I know Buzz Aldren used Rit for sever depression after his Moon landing mission, and CIA man William F Buckly has used Rit for over 30 years for mental brain fuel!, and of course theres the late good ole boy Johnny Cash and his well known love for Dex.

I'M 32 soon and was taken off Rit couple months ago, and this coincided with the start of me smoking, as I never had before(guess my brain demanded something be done about the Dopimine deficit)and I am now addicted. It has somewhat of a similar effect, althought at 1/10 the efficacy

anyway any feedback would be neat.

Cheers

Good luck finding a Pdoc to prescribe a stimulant for your depression. You may as well look for hen's teeth, IMO.

Rvansom,
Its a good thing then that a top Psydoc has written on certain pieces of paper that I struggle with Depression, and (heres the lawfull use for a Stim ) *ADHD*- but don't we all to some degree?

Come on, Psychiatry is really just a, pseudo-science-game, trying to be a real branch of "Medicine"

Hello paul,

If you have a stingy doctor, calmly ask him if he would consider a low dose stimulant with an SSRI or any anti-depressant that to increase effect. Ask about Adderall, that really doesent have a bad side in doctors yet.

Good Luck

Matt

Hi Matt

In New Zealand we don't have Adderall. We have 3 Stim Pills only

1 Methylphenidate 10mg IR (only generic)
2 Ritalin 20mg SR (brand)
3 Dexamphetamine 5mg IR (only generic) known as (dexedrine) (dextrostat) in the US

and thats it!

90% I would say, of this Countrys approx 6000-legal PsyStim users are on Methyphenidate 10 or Rit 20 SR, mainly because of trends here, and maybe that ominious sounding 'Amphetamine' part of Dexamphetamine. As my PsychDoc leadingly said one time, when I casually mentioned it-"its got a higher street value" to which I replied "that doesn't concern me"

Anyways- my new PCDoc has me on a second-line depression-ADHD med, Imipramine, which I finally agreed to try, after 3 Docs in the last 10 years have sugessted to me.
After 1 month and several fainting episodes (hypotension) later there dont seem to be any SE,s- so we'll see if it gets better-kicks in now. I'm due to see him in a few days so we'll see if he keeps me with that, or changes. I do miss the M-date thought.

cheers
