Posted by jazzy on November 23, 2004, at 10:42:19

Hi,

I would like to know if effexor 75 mg is safe during
pregnancy. Please indicate risks involved if there
are any.

Thank You.

No, it is not safe. Your baby will have to go through withdrawal and will suffer. There is a warning on the Effexor information put out by Wyeth and you should also read signature #5121 at www.petitiononline.com/effexor/.

Please don't exaggerate or overgeneralize. I've asked you to be civil before, so now I'm going to block you from posting for a week.

If you or others have questions about this or about posting policies in general, or are interested in alternative ways of expressing yourself, please see the FAQ:

http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/faq.html#civil

Follow-ups regarding these issues should be redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration. They, as well as replies to the above post, should of course themselves be civil.

Thanks,

Bob

I really cant tell you exactly what the risks are, but I'd strongly advise against it. Any drug you take will probably be shared with your baby, and withdrawal after birth is possible. There's also the problem of exposing a developing brain to such harsh drugs. On the other hand, being severly depressed during pregnancy could throw your hormones and whatnot out of whack.

Are you currently pregnant, or are you still considering it? If so, it may be most prudent to put off having a child until you have your depression under control.

Hi there
I am currently 12 weeks pregnant (and all is well) and taking 10 mg of Prozac. Both my psychiatrist and my ob/gyn have told me that this is safe and that to be anxious or depressed could potentially be more harmful to my baby. I don't know anything about effexor - but I would definately talk to my doctor to figure out a way to keep you sane & your baby healthy.
Good luck -

Many Web sites say that nothing is known of Effexor during pregnancy, but they say discuss it with your doctor. How can your doctor know? Until a few months ago, Wyeth claimed that even they did not know. Why did Wyeth not test this drug for its effects on pregnant mothers and newborns?

NEW WARNINGS have been added as of June 28, 2004. When I checked a few days ago, Dr. Bob’s FAQ on Effexor seem not to have been updated since that time. The most recent information I could find follows.

http://www.researchprotection.org/infomail/04/06/29.html :
“FDA Alert: Effexor warnings added for neonatal adverse effects…
Tue, 29 Jun 2004
On June 28, the FDA and Wyeth issued a new MedWatch drug Alert to healthcare professionals:
"Neonates exposed to Effexor, other SNRIs (Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors), or SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors), late in the third trimester of pregnancy have developed complications requiring prolonged hospitalization, respiratory support, and tube feeding."
See the new complete warning at http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/SAFETY/2004/safety04.htm#effexor
Also:
http://www.perinatology.com/exposures/Drugs/Venlafaxine.htm :
“NEONATAL SIDE EFFECTS: Restlessness, hypertonia, jitteriness, irritability and poor feeding occurred in a neonate after maternal use of venlafaxine for depression during pregnancy. The diagnosis was confirmed by a temporary improvement after administration of a low dose (1 mg) of venlafaxine to the boy. The symptoms ceased after 8 days [6].”

This sounds like suffering to me. After suffering through withdrawal from Effexor myself, I cringe at the thought of a helpless infant having to endure this.

That's exactly what I was on with my first PG and he is just fine in fact is in the 95th percentile for stats and has great cognition. I did however switch to the lowest dose Zoloft with my second PG since the NeoNatal Specialist said it had more results about the drug crossing the placenta and being excreted into Bmilk. For me, meds are a must.

Best Wishes.
