Some of the symptoms of serotonin syndrome are similar to those of anxiety. If you ever get serotonin syndrome you will know to receognize it as something entirely different however.

If SS is to happen on Effexor alone, it will happen on a very high dose. Ie higher than 375mg.

Best of Luck

Take it one day at a time.

Having serotonin syndrome on 37.5mg of effexor is exceedingly rare. Yes when you are panicked and depressed it seems like you are experiecing every side effect.

I don't mean to undermine your suffering cause I know effexor can be jagged.

Perhaps even split the 37.5 once again and take a quarter twice a day (morning and noon or something)

Have a bath of epsom salts and just try and take your mind off of the meds so that you can give it a fair trial.

I've been through serotonin syndrome and it's a horrible and scary thing. However, with what you on and considering the dosages - it's HIGHLY HIGHLY unlikely you would get the syndrome. It takes quite A LOT of serotonin to build up to cause the effects and YES you would know it if you were actually having the effects - they include:

Severe to violent uncontrollable shaking
Severe sweating
Rapid increase in body temperature
Confusion
Severe dizziness

I experienced the syndrome while I was on Nardil. I took some regular cough medicine. I thought at first it was a hypertensive crisis - but it was SS. How do I know this? Well, the doctors concluded that the combination of serotonin reuptake via the Nardil plus the cough med. which contained dextromethorphan (a serotonin reuptake inhibitor) caused an severe increase in serotonin.

I've been on two SSRI's or SNRI + SSRI and NEVER experienced any problems - so I doubt you will - however, this is my personal experience. If you are worried, talk to your doctor. And again it takes a lot to build up too much serotonin.

I hope this helps

Jerry

Donna, I took 225mg Effexor XR with 10 to 20mg per day of Prozac for several years. No problems, none. (Except that I gained weight...)

What do you do to ease your anxiety, beyond taking the valium or posting here? Do you have any anxiety reduction techniques that you use to help you settle yourself down? (Did you know that frightened cats will purr until they calm themselves down? That's the sort of thing I'm talking about, although I don't suppose purring is an option.) If you don't have any anxiety reduction mechanisms now, can you talk to someone about learning some? Maybe deep breathing, or biofeedback, or even just writing down the fear and all the possible consequences if it comes true -- and then what can be done if any of them really do happen.

Good for you for continuing to take the medication, and best luck for it working for you.
