first few days on klonopin

Posted by migration on November 4, 2004, at 7:47:21

my Doctor directed me to take one .5mg twice a day for social phobia. I've also been taking Nardil for 3 weeks.

Tuesday- I took .5mg of klonopin. I fell asleep and missed my class. I didn't even remember getting sleepy, it was like I just got knocked out. Took .5mg again before bed.

Wednesday- Took .5mg in the morning. I went to class and had a hard time paying attention, I kept swaying around in my chair. I tried to take notes but I couldn't write well. I dropped my pen a few times and didn't even know. Missed my next class because I wasn't paying attention to the time. (I always pay attention to the time.) I fell asleep around 2pm and didn't get up until 6:30 this morning. Didn't take another .5mg since I was in bed.

Thursday- Today. When I woke up I wasn't sure if it was Thursday or Wednesday. I looked on the calendar to find out. I also woke up every few hours in the night. My body felt heavy. My walking is a bit unsteady.

I talked to someone yesterday and then immediately forgot we had just talked.

I had memory problems before starting medication, but it is worse since starting Klonopin. I thought starting at 1mg might be too much for me. I don't know if it is a factor or not but I am 5'4" and 95lbs. Perhaps I should just take one .25mg twice a day.

Any Comments?

I've been on Klonopin for approx. 3 weeks...

for anxiety (including anxiety in social situations) and I take .25mg 3 times a day. I weigh 160 lbs. Maybe you ARE taking too high a dose. I would call your doc right away!

Good Luck!

Hi, It took me a good 10 days to get used to the klonopin. I had previously been on xanax for years. I was very sleepy at first also (i take 1/2mg morning, afternoon and 1mg at night) After the initial 2 weeks. I feel alot better. I almost told my pdoc i wanted off of it. But now, it has been helping with my social anxiety better than any other benzo ive taken.
Good Luck

Talk with your doc. Some sedation is normal in the beginning, your reaction seems to me a bit more than usually expected. My seadtion and foggy brain lasted about 2 weeks after which I was just left with the antianxiety properties. Prehaps a lower dose is in order.

Klonopin isn't for everyone and I hope you can work it out.

Good Luck,

Hi,

Yes I agree that Klonopin is not for every one. I tried it several times with different doses but all it gave was tiredness, inattention, apathy and depression....however Xanax,Ativan and Lexotan(Bromazepam ) worked great for my Social anxiety/GAD.....so do not worry you have other options....just because Klonopin is good for some people does not mean that the other potent benzos I mentioned are not effective or even much better for lots of people.

Stick with the Klonopin. I've tried many benzos including xanax up to 5mg/day, and klonopin is better than xanax 5mg at only 2mg (even though I must say I take 4mg). The sedation is pretty bad for me as well, but you must trust me and others in that it WILL pass. It won't take long if you just keep the dose consistant. Hang in there migration, I think you'll be happy with the results.
