Can Past Anti Depressants Use CAUSE Depression?

Posted by Buckeye Fan on September 14, 2004, at 15:08:33

Hey all,
I have been very straightforward on this board about going off AD's over 3 months ago.

Has anyone experienced Depression AFTER using AD's for a while?

I hate to admit it...but I am 2 weeks into feeling more depressed now...than ever before in my life.

The Original reason for my AD prescription was for Anxiety and Panic Attacks.,,not Depression.

It seems now tho....life OFF Anti-Depressants
means debilitating daily depression for me.

Could this be a "side effect" of AD usuage...even tho it has been discontinued?????
Anyone else experienced something similiar?

Thanks.
BF

Anxiety and panic are often symptoms of masked depression. Oftentimes people with reccurrent unipolar disorder cycle between states of depression, and states of anxiety.

Hi Buckeye Fan. I've heard the theory that AD usage can cause depression if you stop taking the AD. But to my knowledge, this has never been proven in a study. It's a murky area to try to figure out, because depression has many causes that vary among people. People respond differently to the same AD as well. What I'm pretty sure of is that the serotonergic ADs are often hard to stop taking for some people. Paxil has an especially bad reputation for this.
Scientists still don't know what exactly what these drugs do to your brain. But in my experience, I need to take them because they reduce my depression as long as I'm taking them. Hopefully one day they will have better treatments. The benefits outweigh the potential risks for me and a lot of people.

I don't think discontinuing ADs can cause rebound depression, if that's what you are thinking. I think you have underlying depression, and now that you stopped the ADs, it's come back. Some people just need to stay on ADs. Welcome to a club that no one wants to join.

Thanks to all for responding.
I guess my depression has been "masked" in the past by extreme anxiety.

In reflecting back...I can remember at least 2 times "major depression" had a lock on me...I just didnt realize it.

The rest of my life has been anxiety, anxiety, anxiety.

Need to make a decision concerning returning to Meds I guess. I thought while on the AD's, that anything would be better than the side effects...but I think ive changed my mind.

This is the pits.....If I have EVER not been sympathetic to any depressed individuals..may God forgive me. This is horrible, and no one should have to live this way.

Thanks again for the advice.

BF
