Switching from Clonazepam to Xanax XR ?

Posted by zero on September 7, 2004, at 11:52:12

My pdoc wants me to switch from 2mg./day of Clonazepam, to 2mg./day (1mg. AM + 1mg. PM) of Xanax XR.

The reason for this is to lessen the depression he thinks is exacerbated by Clonazepam. (my Dx is Bipolar II w. panic + social phobia - my other meds. are low-dose Neurontin + Tegretol).

Would appreciate hearing from anyone having experience w. both Clonazepam and Xanax XR.

Thanks...

I am currently being weaned off the Xanax XR, as Neurontin has helped a lot...but I think I may stay on 1mg twice daily as you are about to do...I started on Xanax XR, tried Klonopin at my pdoc's request, and went back to Xanax, I found it better in every way pretty much. The best part I like about it is its AD effects in addition to the inhibitory.

Klonopin is much easier to stop taking because it has such a long half life, but also can exacerbate depression. Xanax is probably the most addictive and most difficult to stop taking, but most effective to treat anxiety with comorbid depression.

If the klonopin is really making you quite depressed it might be worth a trial. Another good alternative might be ativan, has a very low side effect profile. No extended release version though so it would be taken 3 or 4 times daily.

Hope this helps,

Matt
