Anxiety disorder causing physical pain

Posted by Guy on September 7, 2004, at 21:44:15

Does anyone else experience severe physical pain due to their mood disorder? When I don't sleep properly, which is quite often, I get a really bad headache and it feels as if my spinal chord is
on fire. The pain is so severe I often break down in tears and start thinking about suicide. I am currently taking 2mg cloazepam plus Remeron at night to help me sleep, but this does not always do the trick. It seems as if I have become more and more sensitive to pain and sleep deprivation with each passing year. I know there is a direct correlation between how well I sleep and how well I feel the next day. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...I feel like asking my pdoc for a huge dose of morphine!

Hi Guy: I've been wondering a lot about my headaches lately. I have GAD and I've been thinking my recent headaches are due to meds SE's or too much calcium or a magnesium deficiency. Maybe it's just a symptom of my anxiety after all? I just don't know anymore.
I know what you mean though, I've had what I call "3 day headaches" that are so bad my head feels like it's breaking apart. Lack of sleep definitely makes it all much worse...stiff neck etc etc.
There is a correlation between depression, sleep deprivation, body aches and pains and fibromyalgia
too. Have you ever been checked out for fibromyalgia? If Ames Sans Vie is ever on the board, he knows loads about anxiety/depression and pain, he would be a great person to ask for advice. Try "paging" him. He's very knowledgeable. I can't remember the names of meds he's found helpful.
Good luck!
Jas

This is just a guess but are you on any SSRI? When I was on Prozac (same thing with several other SSRIs) I had severe pain in my neck and shoulders. I also had insomnia nad the worse I slept, the worse the pain would be. When I would get off the SSRI the pain would get about 70 per cent better within a week.

Lexapro caused me intense neck and shoulder pain and my doctor thought it was something else causing it. Natuarally, after I stopped Lexapro, all of my pains went away.
