Max, Colleen - Racing thoughts - Doxepin, Seroquel

Posted by becksA on September 7, 2004, at 10:29:55

Just read the posts from a day or so ago about the racing thoughts at bedtime...What do these two drugs do to combat that, are they intended for something besides this? The Neurontin has helped, and I will be upping the dosage starting tonight but I feel I still won't be 100%..

I don't know anything about these two drugs, especially Doxepin, which I haven't even heard of before a few days ago. Are these meds that will change things 24 hours a day or just to sleep? If so, how? Thanks a lot

Seroquel and Risperdal are in the same class of meds, atypical antipsychotics (primarily use for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder). However both Seroquel and Zyprexa are safer and cleaner than Risperdal as mentioned in the above posts. Zyprexa and Seroquel are also useful in low dose for the agitation and high anxiety. They also help to induce sleep (particuliarly Seroquel). I save you from the details of their mechanism of action and bla bla. So to make a long (already) story short, i brought Seroquel to you as an *alternative* to Risperdal, not like an add-on.

I don't know much about Doxepin. I just know that it is a tricyclic antidepressant and a very potent blocker of Histamine at H1 and H2. Very sedating.

Finally, i come back with my first step. If i were you i would raise the dose of my Neurontin, see 400 to 800 mg at night. Try and see. Bye.

Interesting thought about the Seroquel, as I'm currently at 1mg risperdal, about to raise slightly to 1 1/2 daily....Will ask pdoc about it.
Concerning the Neurontin, I'm on a 3x dose of 600 right now, but starting to slowly raise to 800 3x daily, expecting to see some beneficial effects.

Hi!

Here's an informative web page I found on doxepin. I assume it helps with my racing, intrusive thoughts at bedtime because of its sedative action and its anti-anxiety qualities. I often find myself very anxious at bedtime for some reason and helps tremendously. What is your diagnosis? If you are bi-polar, it may not be suitable, but you can alway ask your doctor about it.

Good luck!

I've taken both and find Seroquel to be superior (for me) as a sleep aid, as my Lexapro gets me a bit wound up sometimes.

Doxepin (took for a month) made me have the worst case of the munchies. It was unreal. Had to stop taking that or I'd have eaten myself out of house and home.

Seroquel does not have that effect on me. The way it helps me to wind down at the end of the day (I take it about 2hrs before bed) is great.
I can watch a bit of TV (not too sedated), but when I turn the light off, it's lights out for me too. My wife may stay up and read, but I just crash out at 10PM. I can waken at 6AM and just one cup of coffee is needed and I'm good to go.

Hope this helps

Wildman
