Those of you on Marplan at one time or another

Posted by KaraS on September 7, 2004, at 0:12:15

I'm still trying to get an idea of where this falls on the stimulating/sedation continuum. I know that it's between Parnate and Nardil but do you overall feel that it's neutral or leaning more towards stimulation or sedation?

It's been absolutely neutral for me.

Thanks, Ilene.
Has it helped you sleep or hindered it? How about in terms of the antidepressant value? (If I asked you this before, please forgive me. My memory isn't that great, these days.)

I don't think it's had any affect on sleep, but I take Neurontin and Zyprexa at bedtime, and both of those are sedating. It seems to be working at 50 mg/day. It wasn't working at 40. I've been able to tolerate the side effects well (dietary & drug restrictions, low blood pressure).

Sorry to but in!
I just wondered if you have found Marplan at all helpful for SA.
I won't to try Nardil but am scared about its side effects, perhapse Marplan is better?

I haven't tried Nardil, so I don't know if it has more SEs than Marplan. From what I read Marplan had the fewest SEs of the three MAOIs available in the US, which is why I chose it.

I have GAD but not SA. I take Zyprexa for it. Marplan didn't do anything for my anxiety.

I tried Marplan, with mediocre results. Although Nardil worked years ago wonderfully (after a long, gradual tiration), both it and Marplan haven't packed much of a punch for me more recently. The problem = side effects!

Marplan caused edema and fatigue, with only moderate AD effects. I only gave it 4-5 weeks, though, which I know may not be enough. It was only afterwards that I learned certain things can be added reasonably safely to combat MAOI fatigue, like Wellbutrin. I've even heard now of Provigil being added.

But everyone's different, so good luck, Marplan is worth a shot when making the MAOI rounds. My own problem now involves Parnate which is supposed to be stimulating, but isn't for me. I don't think it's causing weight gain on its own, and it's only been 2+ weeks at 30-40 (I dropped to 30 after a few completely zoned-out days at 40). Tiration here has to be extremely gradual too, I guess.

Thanks. I'm just considering Marplan or Parnate at this point. Nothing definite yet. Hope you're able to make the Parnate work for you.
