MAOI's and Greek food--What can I eat?

Posted by gardenergirl on September 6, 2004, at 3:52:31

Hi all,
I am planning to go to my hometown's annual Greek festival next weekend. I love this event, and usually will eat something like a gyro (with lamb/spam...what's really in there anyway?), souvlakia (I think like pork on a stick, but I forget), moussaka (kind of like Greek lasagna or mac and cheese), and/or spanokopita (spinach and/or feta in phyllos). Does anybody know what I can eat? It seems like it might be much harder to determine ingredients in these dishes, although the ladies who cook are all so friendly, if I hand them my MAOI dietery restrictions card, they may be able to help me.

But does anybody eat Greek food on an MAOI? What would you try, or what have you successfully eaten? I suppose I could have the salad and pick off the feta, but that's no fun at the festival. Hmmm, could just snarf on the pastries... :)

Any suggestions or experiences are welcome.

Thanks!
gg

Hiya gg.

It sounds like russian roulette to me. Even if you got the traditional ingredient list from some source, you can't guarantee that it's what you'll get on the day. I too love Greek food, having been introduced to it in the 2nd largest Greek city in the world (Melbourne, Australia), but I think that maybe this is the time to thank the MAOI for the help, and take the required sacrifice on the chin. Food or depression, hmm?

Best regards from Piquet.

I think you'll be fine if you stay away from feta (or other cheese). The vast majority of reactions are from cheese.

Thanks for input Ilene and Piquet (nm)

i tell them "no feta cheese" on the salad and everything has been cool for me thus far...
but my doc said i should have less problems than many with MAOIs cuz i'm young, male, fit, ok really fit :), have no history of heart problems, on a low dose (30 mg) etc etc

i can even take ritalin with parnate :)

it's been so long i can't even remember what depression feels like.... which kind of sucks... as getting a degree in psychiatry (plus perhaps psychopharmacology) will probably take me 10 years (??) and by that time i will be completely out of touch with the treatment resistant psychiatric disorders (TRPD) community .... i.e. you guys.... :(

i apologize for the babbling :) havn't been on in a while
