What is the difference between all of these? I recently saw the MR designation for the first time. I believe it might be European.

SR = sustained release, twice per day dosing
XL = extended release, once per day dosingSorry, I am not familiar with the MR designation.

Actually, I have one more question. If you cut up an enteric coated extended release pill of Wellbutrin, you eliminate the extended release aspect - but the medication itself is still good, right? (I know that some enteric coatings protect the medication itself and without it the medication is destroyed in the stomach).-K

My pdoc says that Wellbutrin SR can be cut in half with no effect on its sustained release nature but that doing so to the XL version will destroy its extended release mechanism, which is of a different type than what is used in the SR pill. Now, there are also generic versions of Wellbutrin SR becoming available (bupropion SR), and I don't know how each company addresses the sustained release issue, but I do recall someone saying that in at least one case, the generic formulation appeared to be identical to that of the name brand. As for the drug itself in Wellbutrin XL, that is still bupropion HCL AFAIK, which should not in itself be damaged from being chopped up; it will just be absorbed much faster into the body.Todd

Hi:
When I got WB sr last time, it was NOT WB 'SR,' ... was 'Wellbutrin *ER.* Then, I asked the pharmacist for its confirmation and he said just 'the name.' There is NO difference between 'SR' and 'ER,' both have the same effectiveness. However, it made me quite nervous, thinking that this WB (three months' supply through the reputable mail service in Texas) is a 'mistake.' Then, right away after the conversation, I took this 'strange' name of WB "ER.," to see whether his statement is correct. Certainly, ... undoubtly it is 'real' WB sr. Above all, this form of WB ER is truly the EXACT 'clone' to the brand, WB SR. Before this, I took 'WB SR' manufactured by other 'genericl company.' There is a slight difference in regard to 'side-effects,' but I got to like the latter form, 'WB ER.' Furthermore, it made me quite happy knowing this 'generic form' of 'WB ER' is much cheaper than the brand one.
However, I never heard 'MR,' ... in my guess, some of 'generic company' put their own 'creative' name on a bottle of the WB sr.
