Need input on Lamictal and Prozac combo

Posted by theo on September 2, 2004, at 18:56:42

I was asking my pdoc about adding an antidepressant to my Lamictal and she insists that Prozac is preferred with it.

I was asking about Cymbalta and she still insisted going with the Lamictal/Prozac combo, even trying Prozac at a low dose (10mg).

My current Lamictal dose is 100mg.

Any input on why this is or input on how this combo is working for any of you out there would be appreciated.

my pdoc is adding prozac once i get my lamictal level down to 200mg. i asked her to think about cymbalta as an alternative to the prozac. she said she would think about it. lamictal singularly at 350mg had me having panic attacks right and left.

I was taking Lamictal with Prozac, Remeron,Wellbutrin, and Lithium in different combos, but always including Prozac.

Lamictal helped enhance the effect of Prozac, but after, 5 months, I quit taking all and switched to Nardil which I ended up quitting because of intense insomnia, although it was effective in decreasing my depression.

Currently, I am taking Lexapro and I am unipolar depression free. It took Lex 45 days to kick in but when it kicked in, I was depression free. Prozac was my first AD and worked very well for 7 years until it finally pooped out. Hope this helps and good luck to you.

I don't know much about Cymbalta but I do know that doctors tend to feel more comfortable putting their patients on meds that they feel have been tried and true. Prozac has been around so long and can definetly work at a fairly low dose. I'm doing the Prozac 10mg and Lamictal thing because Prozac has worked for me in the past but in higher doses tends to make me worse. My doc felt that adding the Lamictal would enable me to get the benefit of Prozac without the higher dose side effects. Plus she said that Prozac and Lamictal have been shown to work well together without any problem interactions. Lamictal definetly seems to have given the Prozac a little extra punch that had been lost for me after long term use.

You said your taking 10mg Prozac. How much Lamictal are you taking?

I've heard that when you mix the two, not only do you boost the Prozac but also the Lamictal.

am also taking prozac and lamictal, 30mgs of prozac and 50mgs of lamictal. the lamictal had definitely improved the antidepressant effects of prozac (i'm also a longtime user who got "poop out.")
unfortunately the lamictal makes me so nauseous I may have to stop taking it. anybody had any similar experiences or found anything that helps?

I only had the nausea whenever I made a dose increase, which would last about 4-5 days then go away.

I would just take Mylanta to get me through.

Are you taking name brand or generic Prozac?

I am taking generic prozac. Can that be a problem? One pdoc did tell there had been reports of prozac being better than fluoxetine.

I am presently taking 30mg.Prozac and 50mg.Lamictal however I'm having problem with "body rigidity" if thats the right term. My insides feel so tense. Also, I love to read and right now I can't seem to focus enough to enjoy reading at all. Anyone else having these problems?
