anyone NOT having simulant poop-out?

Posted by LeadingZero on September 1, 2004, at 21:55:37

Over the last couple years I've been taking prescribed Adderall to treat my ADD. After some time, seemingly in stages, its positive aspects seem to all but vanish.

At for the first few days I experienced increased focus, inteligence, awareness and pause. After a week, the elivated awareness and inteligence seemed to subside. Keeping the dosage the same, the focus enhacements seem to subside weeks out. (I'm talking about focus in doing things that I don't find perticularly urgent or interesting.) At this point, it seems that the drug is just making me pause before response-- and that mostly because I'm just depleated and tired. Months in, I have more difficulty focusing, even on things that would otherwise have me rapt. I get brainfry easilly at this stage.

I don't think I'm expecting too much from the drug. I excersize moderately, get 7-10 hrs of sleep each night, and eat my wife's excellent, ballanced cooking, as well as take some suppliments. I'm left feeling so exhausted that I've fallen asleep on the industrial carpet in my cube midday.

I've spent the last few weeks off the stimulants, and my energy levels are back up, but so is my ADD.

I hear a lot of this on this board. Is this just the nature of stimulants... to get your hopes up just to fizzle, or is someone having genuine, prolonged success with them? (on the order 1+ years.)

Please respond if you have!

I have been taking adderall for almost a year now, about 7 months in I noticed that all my original symptoms were starting to return. I've tried holidays, nutrition, exercise, etc... all of which have helped tons, but not with the ADD nor the efficacy of the adderall. If adderall is all that you have tried, you may want to try something different. I have heard Dexedrine is much more potent than adderall, but you'll likely run into the same problem again with that. Over at amenclinic.com they have sworn by fish oils and omega acids to help fight the tolerance. In the end I think it is pretty unavoidable; I would personally recommend that when you start taking it again to keep the dose at the lowest effective dose and take holidays every weekend and keep doing what you are doing... This probably didn't help much, but good luck!

I have 3 options you might want to discuss with your doc:

1) increase the Adderall dosage
2) replace Adderall with Ritalin or a different stimulant, then if and when that poops out, go back to Adderall
3) replace Adderall with a combination of Strattera and Provigil (although you would probably want to start with just one of them, then add the 2nd later)

Have any of you tried DXM(dextromethorphan, over the counter) or memantine?
