What med to talk to the pdoc about? Advice please.

Posted by 4mygrls on August 28, 2004, at 15:06:25

I have an appt on tuesday and i want to change my meds. I was recently hospitalized and the pdoc put me on prozac and risperdal. I have taken prozac before with very little result. I really don't like the risperdal. It is making me a zombie and it feels like my body is trying to produce breast milk. So i want to talk with him about changing my meds. I'm also on wellbutrin. I was dx'd at first with bipolar but it has changed to major depression. I have no mania. I am depressed though.severly depressed. i am so unmotivated, and have a hard time dealing with stressful situations. I way overreact. I'm very sensitive and i also have a hard time with making decisions and concentrating. I actually think i have adult add. When i look back at school, i was classic add. Umm, i also suffer from anxiety. I also have severe pms problems, which is where they get the bipolar dx from. anyhow, i've been on just about every ssri there is and alot of the tca's and effexor and wellbutrin. i've tried mood stabilizers with horrible result. they make me more depressed and moody for some reason. i got suicidal when i took them. i also tried klonopin and i think it helped my anxiety but i also got very depressed on it. that's what put me in the hospital. so what do i talk to him about? what should i ask to try? Thanks
Kathi

I have read some really interesting posts from some people who really know alot about meds. I'm not sure what to do.

I haven't tried any yet. I was afraid of what they would do to my pulse. When i was on 3 different depressants my pulse skyrocketed. It was 130 resting. But I also had a panic attack. My pulse did go down. It hovered around 117. But when i went off of the meds(strattera, lexapro and wellbutrin)it went down to high 80's. I also did a 24hr heart halter monitor. It came back with a couple jumps in it. But a couple times i forgot that i wasn't suppose to run the microwave. When i turned in the monitor i forgot to turn in my notes. So there was no way to know for sure if it was the microwave. But i really think it was. I bought a blood pressure machine and keep track of it now. The only time it went up was when i was in the hospital and they put me on prozac and risperdal. But there again a good explanation of that would be that i was nervous and anxious being in the hospital and wanting to go home.

So your on
Prozac
Risperdal
Wellbutrin.....

the first thing i would do is get off the risperdal and try a mood-stabalizer instead, you dont really want to use anti-psychotics unless you need to go there.

I also think you should stay on the prozac for a while, at least until you are stabalized and ready to switch it up. PLus you still havnt been on it that long right? It can still become more effective.

now the wellbutrin has a definate tendancy to raise Blood pressure and Anxiety. id gave me considerably more anxiety and i got chest pains because of my heart rate. now most mood-stabalizers/anti-psychotics will sedate you at some level, so thats where the Dexadrin/Adderal comes in. Adderal is much better tolerated than rittalin and usualy more effective. It also has a considerably less chance of giving you anxiety.

so the combo should be

Prozac/Mood-stabalizer(Lithium, Depakote...ect./D-Anphetimine

this combo should get to work right away, which is needed
so good luck
peace J
p.s. (im not a p-doc yet but i am starting school soon)

i have taken mood stabilizers and they make me a hundred time worse. I get extrememly moody and emotional. I was at my worst when taking them. I have tried lithium, topomax, trileptal and lamictal. none of them worked. I've been on wellbutrin for a long time. i've been on the prozac for about a month now. my pulse can get high but my blood pressure is very low. low blood pressure has been an issue for me.
