NEED ADVICE!! Asking doc about Risperdal.

Posted by BRC on August 30, 2004, at 11:55:39

Hi, I will be seeing my pdoc. tommorow and I am hesitant to ask for a medication change. I have severe OCD, anxiety, and Depression. I currently take 60mg of Lexapro, 30mg of Remeron, 4mg of Klonopin, and 1,200mg of Trileptal. All of this medication has worked very well with my anxiety, depression, and compulsions.

But my biggest problems are the intrusive, unwanted thoughts associated with OCD. My therapist along with my own resarch and contacting doctors at the OCD foundation have revealed that a very low dose of the atypitacal anti-psychotic Risperdal approx. 1-2mg along with an SSRI has helped many patients with the thought disorders associated with my sort of OCD.

But I am afraid to ask my pdoc. about trying me on the medication. And I know that I am on so much medication now I am scared to take another one. Also I have heard of irreversable side effects associated with antipsycotics. So, I don't know what to do. But I wonder if this medication could really help with this horrible thoughts that are ruining my life.

I would appreciate anyones comments or advice on this subject. THANKS.

I suffer from pretty much the same symptoms as you, though mostly anxiety/depression and am still trying to find the correct meds to help this...Right now I am starting Neurontin. However I have been on Risperdal for quite some time (1mg daily) and it does seem to have an overall evening-out effect on me and my thoughts. It doesnt really do anything for anxiety/depression, but for inner thoughts it has seemed to help. I'm not sure how it works for most in regards to tolerability, but for me I have been able to start up at 1mg and stop cold turkey if I wanted to, I never have any side effects whatsoever. To me it has seemed quite the stable, "quiet" med that I barely feel.

Hi:

---- It seems to me like your M.I./OCD(severe form) needs atypical. As most of your circles, from the therapist to expert on OCD suggested/recommended you to take 'Risperdal,'... why are you hesitating?

In my case, 'Zyprexa' that is a close 'cousin' to Risperdal has been helping 'most of rapid cycler/thoughts' associated with Bp II. At the beginning, it made me quite 'sedating' even a tiniest dosage, 2.5 mg. In my guess, you may need to take a VERY small dosage to see whether or not Risperdal is right for you. Because, some of posters are NOT able to take any of A.P., even the weakest AP., Seroquel. Also, Risperdal is, ... some saying, more potent than Zyprexa. Then, you need to talk to your pdoc. as to 'side-effects' and some concerns you have.

As to 'TD' and other 'irreversible side-effect,' ... I truly understand. However, I've been on the Zyprexa 5mg for the past three and a half years and NO problems at all. Rather, I have problems on some of A.D.s I was in the past. For me, Zyprexa is my biggest fan, first of all knowing this med. helped most of Bp symptoms. Without A.P., I would be almost semi-dead not able to do any of my daily acitivies.

Concerning 'too many' med., .... in my knowledge, if you'd on Risperdal, probably one of 'sedating effect' meds., Klonopin may NOT need because Risperdal could take care of. Also, the dosage of other meds. may be reduced to some degree, particualy 'Remeron' that has 'sedating effect,' although some saying 'good' for 'anxiety.'
Further, most of 'serious/severe form' of M.I., from depression to Shizo. needs several different med./combo. Then, in this respect, you may NOT need to concern. Rather, your 'well-being'/recovery is VERY important.
H.G.

Hi....

For what it's worth...I have been using Risperdal for over a year, and it is just *amazing*. I take 2mg a day for my rapid-cycling BP and Depression.
The reason I take this amount, and it may be a tad expensive, is that I found some research that one good 2-3mg dose of Risperdal a day, along with other meds, really works well for dysphoria, aggitated depression. I have *not* found any of the other atypical AP's to come even close as knocking out a bad mood as I have with Risperdal.
Any lower dose seems to have not much, if little, effect.

Best wishes!
Jay

Risperdal is worth trying. Do you use Remeron for sleep? Zyprexa could possibly replace Remeron & do the same thing as Risperdal, but I would try the Risperdal first, as it's a very potent 5-HT2A antagonist.

Cheers,
Panda.
