Effexor Eye problems

Posted by Californiakc on August 26, 2004, at 14:34:17

It just hit me that someone mentioned having eye problems while going off Effexor (I think it was while withdrawing), and rather than go back and try to find that thread, I figured I'd start a new one. I had some horrible problems with my eyes, I believe it was when I was withdrawing from the Effexor, but it could have been during the use too, I'm not sure. I had three doctors check me. One said it was an eye infection, while the two ophthalmologists said it was related to my thyroid (I'm on thyroid medication). Now I'm wondering... Anyone else have any eye problems with Effexor-XR?

Hi - Yes,Effexor did affect my vision - esp in my contacts. However, this had happened not only with Effexor but with a couple of different AD's.

Good Luck!

Effexor XR made my eyes too dry to wear my contact lenses. After 4 months or so it got better. No vision problems, though. I'm on 150mg/day and Wellbutrin XR 300mg/day.

I already had very slight vision problems and found they increased after Effexor XR 75mg. I experience an almost "tunnel" like vision and can see next to nothing at night.

Thank you for your replies. My eyes got really, really bad. At one point for about four days, you'd think I was a vampire in need of a fix. They were SO bloodshot! Thank God they are doing okay now, but this problem lasted a good three months. Very uncomfortable. The good thing about knowing that others were affected as well is that now that I'm off the anti-depressants, I don't have to worry about this problem returning. I guess living in the deserts of California was already dry enough for me!
Thanks again!

I have also had eye problems on and after being on effexor ut I never correlated the two. Most of the problems occured when I had my contacts in and it actually gave me more anxiety because I thought I could never wear them again. I thought I was just getting old (just past 40). I would have very irritated eyes and would have to take my contacts out, which lead to further irritation. I am hoping this ends soon as I have been off effexor for almost 3 months. I also get blurred vision most of the day, (afternoon and evenings are the worst). Working in front of a computer was suspected to be the problem as well as reading and watching TV on the weekends or evenings. I have been to an opthamologist and she said there was nothing wrong. I have another appointment with a different one, so we will see if there are any changes.

I experienced very blurry vision while first starting Effexor XR. It felt like my eye muscles wouldn't focus on anything and I also had a lot of headaches in my eye sockets. Now almost a year later, I've decided to stop using Effexor. I am towards the end of tapering off of it. I am at 1/8 of my usual dose and am having extreme eye aching, blurriness, and puffiness under my eyes. I am hoping this resolves itself when the Effexor is finally all out of my system.

I just came back from the Optamologist and just as previous visits, he didn't find anything wrong. He just changed my perscription, which was not a big change and won't fix the problem. I will probably go back in a week or so and demand something else be checked. After 3 months of withdrawal I am thinking about going back on Effexor. The withdrawal symptoms are still there and depression is starting to come back. At least I know the depression will not come back if I am on it.
