Hi, I just started prozac and Im taking 20mg, along with what will eventually be 100mg of lamictal. Im at 50mg now...I havent noticed major changes since ive been on it (2 wks today), I seemed to have had different kinds of side effects. I was having brain zaps and extreme hyperness or extreme tiredness. But I seem to be getting past that now. But when i see my pdoc in 3 wks, i will have her up my dose to 40mg i think. Did your doc start you at 40? Or did you switch from another drug?

40 mg is about normal. I take 60mg for depression and OCD. All AD's effect people differently. Prozac seemed to help my depression within 3 weeks. But I felt a subtle improvement even before that. I've read that it can take up to 3 months for any AD to kick in and the side effects to go away. I really didn't have any side effects with Prozac except for insomnia, which was taken care of by switching from night to morning dose, and adding Trazadone at night (its and older AD that is not addictive and good as a sleep aid). Other than that, Prozac has helped better than any other med for my depression hands down. I feel like its more stimulating than others, which was what I needed. Meds like Lexapro and Paxil seem to be less stimulating and didn't help me, but they do help alot of other people. Just give it a chance and see how it does. If it doesn't work, try something else. There's so many different ones and they can all work differently on different people.

I started at 20mg and went up to 100mg which is actually 20mg higher then recommended max dose. All SE's you have mentioned went away for me after 2 to 3 months. However, I noticed my unipolar depression lift dramatically in 2.5 weeks. I took Prozac for over 7 years until it finally pooped out. I am currently taking Lexapro which is supposedly an improved combo of Prozac and Celexa. It took 45 days, but Lexapro also dramatically lifted my depression. I have been on Lex for nearly 2 months now. Good luck with Prozac. It was a good med for me for 7 years.

I am currently taking 30mg of Lexapro. I had taken Ambien and then Seroquel briefly but stopped and now am able to sleep with taking only OTC Benadryl. The other Rx's I am taking are Tylenol/Codeine for chronic back pain and Lopid to lower my cholestrol.

Thanks for your so prompt reply.Concerning the "literature" regarding the efficiency of low doses Lexapro, aren't you surprised that you have had to increase up to 30mg/day(the literature talking about...10mg/day?!being at least so efficient as 40mg Celexa). Is your dx BP2 or UP depression? don't you take any Mood S.?

I had not read that literature you're referring to. However, like I said in my previous post, I had actually been taking 100mg of Prozac which was actually 20mg more than the recommended max dose of 80mg. This leads me to believe that my body required a higher dose then the usual recommended max dosages. In fact, I will probably have to increase my Lex to 40mg soon as I can already feel my unipolar depression (no mania) creeping back ever so slowly. I used to take Prozac, Remeron, Wellbutrin, Lamictal and Lithium at the same time until I decided that after 10 years of SSRI's, SSNI's and TCA's that I try something totally new like Nardil, an old AD, MAOI, which have fallen out of favor with pdoc's due to the newer, supposedly less side effects, more effective arrival of Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, etc.
