dexadrine increasing anxiety?

Posted by becksA on July 11, 2004, at 12:09:10

I am weaning off Xanax XR and moving onto Klonopin for my social anxiety....and for a day or two I've tried not taking my dexadrine for my ADHD...and I think that I'm noticing less anxiety...just random, or would this make total sense? If so....anybody have experiences with better ADHD stims in terms of not heightening the social anxiety so much? Thanks

hello there, chemist here....it sounds quite strange to me, almost as if your dx is questionable: you are getting off of xanax, which is not a pleasant event (i have been there), and introducing klonopin, which is not entirely cross-compatible with xanax, so this alone ought to induce some anxiety/stress/etc. and your dexedrine was prescribed because you have adhd, so dexedrine should have a calming effect on you, yet you report less stress upon decrease of dexedrine. so, if you really have adhd, then reducing the dexedrine should result in lack of focus, inattention, and hyperactivity, yet you report the opposite, in addition to a taper from xanax and titration of klonopin, which alone ought to cause some unpleasantness. please let me know your thoughts about this...you might very well do fine on klonopin alone or with a reduced dose of dexedrine.....all the best, chemist

i agree level klonoplin with dexedrine, i used to take Phenobarbital with my dexedrine to level it, because i dont repond good to benzo's, but pheno didnt mix good with my system.

chemist, i havent yet taken any Klonipin....i've gone down from 3mg to 1mg per day of xanax xr in 2 days with seemingly no ill effects! it's weird, i barely feel like my anxiety has gone up at all....which is why i think stopping the dexadrine has caused it. i can't think of any other reason. since i did fine today with only 1mg of xanax, i think tomorow i may try starting out the klonopin....which she started me off at 0.5 mg 3 times daily. your thoughts....

hello, chemist here...do i understand correctly: you are tapering xanax and you have stopped taking dexedrine and your anxiety level has gone down? if this is the case, then i think your anxiety was caused by the dexedrine. please confirm/correct my assumption.......all the best, chemist

yeah that is indeed the case! but i dunno, the anxiety was so severe i find it hard to believe Dexadrine could have caused that....like you said before it should have the opposite effect anyway. even more, im sure there were a few days in there in between prescriptions when i was off dexadrine when the anxiety was still there, i would have noticed the change im sure....

hello again, chemist here...it would appear as if your anxiety was being held in check by the xanax. one wonders if your doctor could have saved the trouble and cost - financial and emotional - by having never prescribed either of them to do, doesn't one? perhaps a wee bit of klonopin is all the patient really needs....i wish you all the best, and good luck in your quest for a psychiatrist who pays attention to her/his patients' needs......yours, chemist

Hey! I take a stimulant+klonopin combo as well. I'm ADHD, but I also have depression and anxiety and insomnia, soooo the stimulants can increase my anxiety even as they increase my focus and help the depression (I also take a tricyclic AD). You might want to try a beta blocker...propanalol helps me alot; I take it as needed, and it slows down my heart and pulse so I can calm down if I get too stressed. I take my klonopin at the same time as my stimulant to level everything off; that's pretty common for people with ADHD and anxiety. If you anxiety continues to be a problem even with the Klonopin, I'd ask for an AD.

no...i take Tofranil-PM, the new-ish formulation of imipramine (sp?). Anyway, my doc is operating under the assumption that tricyclics+stimulants improve depression (so far, so good), especially for people like me, who don't respond too well to SSRIs or even combo-therapy with the newer ADs.
