Posted by lexman on June 11, 2004, at 22:13:33

I have been on prozac 20 for 5 weeks and i just upped my dose yesterday to 40mg.I also am taking klonopin .5 when needed. i took .75mg today.i think i am building a tolerance to it.I was also wondering does it make u depressed.I have been on it for over 4months.The past 2 days i have been severely depressed.I havent been eating and i have been sleeping during the day.Does prozac make u have more anxiety? i thought it was suppose to help.

hello there, chemist here. prozac is very activating, and i suspect that either the klonopin is overprescribed OR that you have reached a plateau with prozac. time to either reduce dose for klonopin and/or swithc from prozac to a second-generation SSRI. all the best, chemist

Klonopin can definitely make some people feel more depressed. It does me.

Hi Lexman,

Benzos can be depressing, it's part of the reason why doctors prefer not to prescribe them. If Prozac doesn't help & you have already failed a Lexapro trial then I would consider a TCA trial. Nortriptyline would be a good first TCA to try as it has mild anxiolytic qualities while having less side effects than the tertiary TCA's. A short term option to Klonopin would be to try Ativan, Valium or Xanax.

Cheers,
Panda.

Klonopin seems to be particularly so. Probably because it messes with serotonin.

Klonopin works well for some people, but made me dangerously depressed. It took different trials of it and three suicidal depressions for me to realize it was the Klonopin. I guess I was a little slow to catch on :(

If this is of any use, you might be interested to know that I took 1mg of Valium on Friday in the hope that it would get rid of the agitation I was feeling and yesterday I was so depressed it was unbelievable.

I can only assume that it was the Valium that did that. Equally, for you it could be the increase in Prozac. I've been taking Prozac for 7 weeks and have experienced depression like I have never known (although it has got gradually better) since taking it.
