DEXEDRINE or RITALIN?

Posted by PaulbWell on June 9, 2004, at 21:25:40

I was after some feedback from people who have taken both of these Meds. My PsyDoc has diagnosed me with ADD?/Depression and placed me on Methylphenidate, started at 10mgs 2x day,now after 3 months 20mgs 3x aday. I live in New Zealand and these are the only two Meds for this. I have heard Ritalin is more affective at stimulating the higher thought processes, and less somatically stimulating, as compared to Dex? and this is why it is used more often, for ADD symptoms. Could I please have some feedback from people who have tried both?

I live in Aust and have tried both with me it was really a decision of economics. The govt subsidies dex however Ritalin is not covered under our PBS system.
Through my experience Ritalin was good for 1.5 hours than I was getting rebound effects so basically within 2hours I had to keep taking my prescription. With the dexemphatamine the effect came on gradually within and I began to feel it fading within 4-5hrs but gradually.
I must admit my focus was more intense with ritalin and was able to absorb more information within the 2hour or thereabouts time frame.
In Australia they have introduced Concerta and Ritalin LA which is a slow release formula of ritalin but I do not know whether its as effective as the immediate release.
You might consider it because the side effects are fewer. In OZ concerta costs something like $120 vs dexemphatamine which retails for $25.
Please note that wasn't a typo error,yes a $100 difference.
take care and i hope the all blacks start winning world cups again.

I personally don't care for ritalin, its too short living and I crash on it because I can't seem to remember to get my next dose in before the crash begins. I also gained weight on it, as soon as I would start to crash I would want to eat everything is site. I have had good results on dexedrine sr and short acting adderall combinations. 2 20mg dexedrine sr and 1/2 12.5 adderall in the morning. About 7 hours later 25 mg of adderall. Unfortunately I my system has become used to the combination and I am going to have to try focalin...which is a new form of ritalin. I am hoping after a month on this and a few medication holidays that I will be able to go back on my previous medications.

I have noticed that most medications work best on an empty stomach. Especially adderall. I wait atleast 1 to 2 hours before eating after meds. Anything acidic will also lower the absorption of your medication. Coffee and Pop have a negative effect also. Hope this helps. :)

Thanks Blondegirl. I know about baking soda and amphetamines and the potentiating effects. I thought, that Ritalin was a different beast in this reguard, and was uneffected by this. I also thought Caffeine potentiated Stims? and if someone takes their Ritalin by melting it under their tongue like sugar, which Rit does, does it matter if you have eaten or not.

*(Please also) is it normal to experience a *very* down mood if someone misses taking their dose, for hours, or a day or more? to feel shaky and weak? Im worried.

Hi Paulbwell

In my experience and from what I have read here, eating before ritalin lowers the kick in feeling. Medication is alot of trial and error :) I have taken my adderall with weak hot tea, I think it is the melting of the medication that kicks it in faster. I alway drink two glasses of water after that. The more water you drink, the less acidic your urine will be. Being dehydrated also makes you tired. Melting meds in my mouth also makes my gums hurt at time.

What you are experiencing when not taking your meds is normal. Its part of withdrawl symptons called crashing. When taking a med holiday its better to take a small dose and taper to a no med day. It's good to take med holidays, that way you don't build such a tolerance to your medication.

I am trying focalin right now. I'm really not impressed. I took 10 mg this morning and then slept for hour 1/2. I took 5 more miligrams about 30 min ago. I kind of feel like doing house work so maybe this med will work out :)

Hope this helped.

i got a prescription for modafinil last week
and using 100mg every other day.
its made a big difference for motivation and i use it to supplement dex because believe it or not i get tired when i concentrate for a while on dex however on modafinil i feel alert somewhat.i like to use 200mg every day however its very expensive.
let me know what your experience is like.
