off of mirtazapine

Posted by Darryl Sanford on May 7, 2004, at 19:07:51

I took mirtazapine from April 2003 until November, a period of about 7 months. It seemed to help the odd physical sensations I was having that were attributed to depression, but also gave me bizarre dreams that seemed as bad. I just decided to stop after 7 months, and did that by cutting down to half a dose for a couple of weeks, then stopping entirely. I didn't have withdrawal effects as far as I could tell.

The odd sensations never entirely left (things like burning in the chest and wrists) but I've learned to live with them. Taking psychoactive medicines distrubs me because I keep monitoring my thoughts and wondering "is this me or just the medicine." Does anyone else have this aversion to taking medicine? Does anyone just eventually get well without taking something?

of course you can get well w/out taking something! taking something never really makes anybody "well" it just can make life tolerable. i took remeron for a while. it just made me tired all day. is the sensation a burning or a tingling? i have been outside before and thought that it was sprinkling because my skin was tingling. that was not on the remeron though. it was while i was on neurontin.

a few of my psych professors argue that meds make it harder to really get well. they say that meds blunt emotion, which needs to be felt in order to get well. they are of the opinion that emotions are essential and they will find a why to break through. i don't totally agree with them. i think that meds can help you survive a difficult time, but if you can do it without meds, by all means go for it!

Thanks, I've had the same impression. Other than helping me sleep in the beginning, I've never gotten much help from antidepressants. But I've gotten better eventually on my own after a depressive episode. First time, it was about a year and a half.
