I have been on EffexorXR for about 6 months. I am on 113 Milligrams. I was just wondering when I should know when I dont need it anymore. Sometimes I feel like I dont need it and other times I dont. I dont want to be on it if I dont need it. When do you all know when to come off your meds? Thanks for the help...

Robz- you have 2 excellent questions.
First of all, knowing when to discontinue a drug is a tough issue. When did you first feel depressed? Did there seem to be a specific reason for your depression? How long have you been on antidepressants?
Timing is also important. For example, if you have final exams coming up soon, you probably do not want to discontinue right now.
As for sexual side effects, the best solution is usually to use a drug like Viagra if you are a male. Ginseng is an herb which has helped counter my sexual side effects. For some people it helps to add Wellbutrin, Remeron, or Ritalin. Yohmibe can also work but it causes a lot of jitteriness.

Bill LL....I have been dealing with anxiety and panic attacks for about 3 years. It was not until I moved in with my boyfriend and then realized that situation was not for me that I became depressed. I think I became depressed because my anxiety was so bad. So that all happened in early December which was 5 months ago.
I am a female and so the Viagra probably will not work...I would like to try something natural to fix the sexual side effects, not another anti-depressant.

My psydoc and my fam doc before her suggested staying on until you felt better at a continuous dosage for six months. I have done this and I am starting to ramp down now.

I too am considering getting off of Effexor. I've been on 75mg for 6 months. It was good for a bit, but in the past month I feel irritable and tired. Really deep yawns where my eyes want to seal themselves shut. I get plenty of sleep. Exercise, eat well. I was going through a specific situation that I felt caused the anxiety and depression. I've done a lot of self-work, spiritual work, and now I want off the drug. I hear absolute HORROR stories about withdrawal and wish that my doctor had offered up more info. other than just tossing me the free samples and saying "these won't make you gain weight" since I expressed that as my main concern going on the AD.
My question is WHEN should I start weening myself off? (I have a dr. appt. later this week) I am a school teacher and school concludes at the end of this month. I am moving to a new city where I have a new job in July. Should I just make June my detox month, or start weening now, or after I get moved and settled?? Detoxing at the new job? I don't want to be addicted to this drug. I pride myself on very natural living. I felt desperate when I went to my doctor 6 months ago.
Any input from those who've been there??
Thank you!
