Risperidol and Prolactin

Posted by mollyvish on April 9, 2004, at 9:22:04

Hi - I've been taking Risperidol for 2 weeks at 1mg at bedtime (10pm). My doctor checked my prolactin level at 10:30am after the first 2 weeks and it was 88.9ng/ml. Do you know if this is normal for such a low dosage? I am also taking Effexor 300mg at bedtime (I've been taking that also for 2 weeks). Any information you have I would be very greatful. My dr thinks it may be a tumor and not the meds. Thank you.

I read that the normal range for premenopausal women is between 2 – 20 ng/ml. I don't happen to know how much increase one would expect from treatment with 1.0mg of Risperdal (risperidone), but Risperdal is known to be about the most potent of the antipsychotics, both typical and atypical, to produce increases in prolactin and hyperprolactinemia. From what I've read on Medline, levels of prolactin can exceed 50 ng/ml, and often beyond 100 ng/ml. However, the dosages of risperidone cited were generally higher than 1.0 mg.

I keep running into that same problem with risperidol being cited higher also. No one seems to have done a study on the effects of the 1mg. Thank you.

Hi,

Are you taking it for psychotic symptoms?
Have you tried Zyperxa or Seroquel?, they don't raise prolactin.

Cheers,
Panda.

Personally I'd avoid the Antipsychotic drugs for as long as possible with the exception of Seroquel & maybe Zyperxa.

I assume you are BP2 taking Effexor, Seroquel might be good for you.

If you are BP1, have you tried the usual BiPolar trio of Lithium and/or Lamictal and/or Depakote? Most BP1 people seem to be taking one or two of those three.

I'm bp2. I really haven't tried anything else. I just don't see how my prolactin level can be raised by 4x's the "normal" with such a low dose of risperidol. It is very confusing.

Risperdal is a heavy duty drug, it's a drug to take after atypical AP's have failed because it does raise prolactin like the older AP's. If you aren't having delusions & hallucinations I would avoid it altogether. Lamictal or Depakote are a much safer bet as mood stabilisers.
