The absolute best replacement therapy to stop smoking IMO is Nictrol Nasal SPRAY (NS). This is not the one you puff on, it's the nose spray. I could not have quit smoking without it.

Why do I think it works so well? Well, because it is so rapidly absorbed in the nasal passages, it HITS you just like a drag on a cigarette. Thus you get an instant nicotine fix.

Drop the gum, the patch, the losenges and go with the nasal spray. It works (but it's not cheap). ;)

Cheers,

Azure

I don't know if its in your area or not. But I think its new. One shot for $350, and you never want to smoke again, no withdraw at all. Only one catch:((Prospect of effectiveness greatly less likely with persons taking a lot of psychotropic meds). (I would have trieded it. Supposidly many insurance companies will pay for the treatment.

My smoke history is about 3 years. and between 3-10 per day.
now I do occationally take adderall in the situation I need highly focused.
Adderall give me a very suprised good effect......quit smoking.
I don't understand why, may be some smart people can explain it. Any body know ?

i read somewhere that ciggarettes increase dopamine on a small scale...adderall also increases it...if the ciggarette thing is true, you simply got your "dope" from somewhere else

Thinkfast is on the right track, IMHO. The brain's dopamine system is responsible for the feelings of reward and instant gratification you get when smoking a cigarette; Adderall both mildly inhibits the reuptake and strongly promotes dopamine release (and does the same to norepinephrine). With your reward circuits already very stimulated, the mechanism in your brain that nags at you telling you when to smoke a cigarette is probably "turned off". Just speculation, but it makes quite a bit of sense.

I agree with Azure on Nicotrol Nasal Spray, with one big exception -- there is *nothing* better than using the nasal spray *in conjunction* with the Nicotrol Inhaler! The inhaler addresses "hand-to-mouth gratification" issues that smokers have, while the nasal spray does not. I quit smoking about six months ago very easily and painlessly using both treatments together.

Bummer, the wellbutrin does the trick for me. Maybe you need more? I even stayed quit while living in France, where it is weird NOT to smoke. Keep trying!!

This happens with any stimulant that works on the dopamine system. Adderall causes the release and blocks reuptake of DA, basically it causes a very high percentage of receptors in the dopaminergic system to become occupied, either by d-amphetamine or dopamine itself. It is more powerful in this regard than even nature's most potent stimulant, cocaine.

Since the addictive nature of nicotine relies on dopamine binding to these receptors, and nicotine does not have the ability to "knock" the ligand off of these occupied receptors, the pleasure/reward from smoking a cigarette is almost entirely abolished; dependant on the dosage of the stimulant of course.

Isnt it that Nicotine exert its dopaminergic effect, by faciliating the release of Dopamine indirectly by stimulating nicotinic acetylcholine receptors? A directly dopaminergic drug would just replace the indirect effect of nicotine in my opinion.

That is correct, I never stated the DA release was direct/indirect, rather that ultimately the reinforcing properties of nicotine depend on dopamine receptor binding. In fact, it is indirect, but say 95% of postsynaptic DA receptors are already occupied, this increase in extracellular DA will not contribute much to the reinforcing effect of smoking a cigarette. So, in essence you are only trading one addiction for another, but this does eliminate the actual habitual act of smoking a cigarette, and hence can help with smoking cessation, in the same way nicotine patches/gum/etc do. I hope this is more clear.

Wellbutrin(Zyban) takes away the "high" from smoking, so you don't enjoy it. I wasn't a heavy smoker though, and it mainly was a nervous habit, but I did notice getting no buzz at all when I did smoke.

Good Luck!
