New NEWS on ANTIDEPRESSANTS!!!

Posted by AntiTrust on March 28, 2004, at 8:02:04

I heard recently that if you are on the list of 10 certain antidepressants that your doctor should watch closely for suicidal thoughts.
I happen to be on one of these drugs on the list!
anyone hear this news recently and any comments on it?

Yes it was on the news the other night,
I wouldn't worry about it unless you have a history of sucide tendencies. I to am on one from the list but I don't think you should worry about it that will only make you feel worse.

The thing that surprises me is that they are all new ADs, no TCAs or MAOIs. This is strange, SSRIs have been linked to murders and suicides but this has never happened fot other classes of antidepressants. Does anybody has any idea about it ?

I've seen the list, Effexor is on it, so is Paxil and Celexa I think.

But I wonder how they can tell whats from the drugs and wahts from the depression. I mean its quite common to have suicidal ideation when you're depressed.

I also think, if I remember well, that its either going to happen or not ... in that if you've been on the meds for long and have not had any problems then there is nothing to worry about.

Interesting... I was on Prozac for a week or so, and it seemed to ramp up my suicidal thoughts.

Hi all- I just happened onto these announcements yesterday while frantically looking for info on serotonin syndrome. I was amazed at how all SSRI's were included and no, you do not have to have a past hx of suicidal thoughts. THAT's the scarey part...AND, the other part of the warning is that the SSRI's may cause the patients depression to get worse! Check it out for yourself. below are three links to this info!

Frankly, I would like to see some GOOD, well done stasticial results -- not done by the drug companies. Yes, it may be a concern, but it sounds to me as though they (the pharm companies) have known this all along. Part of this is that it took them so long to admit it and publish it!

I couldn't agree more! I read that more than half of the FDA advisory committee memembers are on the pharm company boards!!! Hmmm....sounds like good money making to me!

I too saw the news and had to laugh (cynically).

After participating on these boards for 5 months, I could have told them that. Almost everyone who has started on Lexapro reports an increase in anxiety, depression and, yes, some suicidal thoughts, during the first few weeks of adjustment to an SSRI. This seems to be a common side effect that is, of course, not listed on any literature. The only way some of us got through that part of the ramp-up to the drug was the support found on this board - learning that everyone goes through it and gets through it!

It's a shame the pharm companies and doctors don't read this board and realize they could short-circuit the bad press by encouraging physicians to support their patients through that period with anti-anxiety meds or whatever might be needed til their bodies adjust, that it's not a permanent side effect.

That's my 2 cents worth! Good luck to all!!

I know that many would disagree with me, but I think that we have to take these "earth-shattering" reports with more than a grain of salt. As one poster indicated, it's often difficult to distinguish between the side effects and the underlying symptoms.

What riles me is that the pseudo-scientific "experts" feel compelled to publicize their new and extraordinary discoveries regarding foods, medicines, and other stuff that humans have been ingesting or doing for ages, and we all know as much as they about the consequences--good, bad or fictitious.

Examples of the latest findings: a glass of wine every day is good for you. Taking a couple of aspirin every day is great for your heart. Potato chips and french fries have high levels of a particular substance which, if ingested in high amounts, can be carcinogenic. Sure, some of the findings may be true, but then what? Should we stop taking anti-depressants or eating french fries and potato chips?

At the turn of the century, it was a fact that masturbation caused insanity. And handling frogs caused warts. These were supposedly empirically-based findings. What's next? It seems that psychopharmacology is in crying need of valid empirical facts. Until then, dubious reports like "Anti-depressants can cause suicide" are the best we can get.

I agree cubbybear! (nm)

I understood that the suicide precaution is when the med is initially started. There is another part to this story that most psych people are aware. There is a very dangerous curve in depression. The most dangerous point is when a very suicidal patient begins treatment. The patient will have increased energy due to the medication. Therefore, this is the time when they will most likely take their life.

One of the girls that committed suicide was having some very adverse reactions that went unrecognized. Another was being overdosed and then a placebo was abruptly replaced with the high dosage of the particular situation. In both of these situations, the dosage may have been the problem. It appears that in some cases children are being given adult dosages of these medications and it may be too stimulating and increase agitation that will promote the suicide risk.

However, I do believe that these medications may have serious adverse reactions with some patients. It may be in part to genetics. That can happen with any medication.

More very good points, thanks! (nm) » shadows721
