Posted by tony_sa on March 18, 2004, at 12:52:19

Hi i'm now under a university health plan, of course their too cheap to offer the real mccoy's of drugs so i am now getting generic prozac. they tell me its no different. i did a search on this board but most answers were from 01 earlier and didn't offer any links or factual evidence to back an argument.

Anyone help me out here? Trying to make a wise choice...

Hi Tony:

I just went through dealing with generic prozac. I switched from the real thing 20mg, to generic 20mg. Within the following weeks I started experiencing the symptoms I experience when I am not on enough prozac. I called the doctor and explained my symptoms of depression. He said well I didn't tell you this (which was great to hear!!!) BUT, the FDA will approve a generic even though it can have less than or more than a 20% of the actual drug. (I have found a new doctor since then). It would have been nice to be aware of what I MIGHT experience. So, we assumed I was getting approximately %20 less prozac in the generic 20mg prozac. The way we have solved this problem is to put me on 30mg generic to make up for the 20% difference. It's anybodys guess how much prozac I am actually getting???? However, going up on the generic dosage seems to have balanced me out again. Hope this helps!

Peggy
