Meds to increase appetite w/o sedation?

Posted by utopizen on February 20, 2004, at 18:40:33

Mmmm... I think I may haved asked this be4, but is there an antidepressant that causes weight gain without being sedating?

I've got some rpetty big ADD+comborbid sleepiness going on, which means I can't take an antipsychotic for appetite b/c that would make me mroe tired, yet the stimulants I need to take make me have no appetite and Have t oforce feed myself.

Any suggestions?? Do bipolar meds sedate noticably? Come on guys, there's something out there that makes you gain weight, let me in! =) I'm very thin, it's annoying...

Utopizen,

Unfortunately, this won't be of much help to you, but I thought you might be interested to know that several years ago, my cat's veterinarian was trying to increase my cat's appetite. My cat had a terminal illness, but was not yet at the stage where she should have been put to sleep. First the vet gave my cat some anabolic steroids to increase her appetite. When that didn't work, he gave her intravenous valium, and it worked immediately. Oral Valium has no such effect, but the intravenous Valium caused my cat to become ravenous within a minute or so of injection. In fact, we set up a food dish right next to where she sat on the examination table so she could begin eating as soon as the Valium kicked in.

Yes it sounds silly but it fixed my daytime sleepiness problems & it might make you hungry. Start low & go slow for sleep problems.

Cheers,
Panda.

Depakote! If you titrate up slowly it shouldn't make you too tired. But taking Depakote for weight gain is like using Topamax for weight loss, i.e. good likelihood of cognitive impairment/physiological side effects. And on the dosage of methamphetamine you're on, I do not know if even this would do it. Unfortunately, most other psych meds cause weight gain through their antihistaminergic effects, which cause sedation. Have you talked to your pdoc about this? A real physician would know a whole lot more than I do about this (hopefully). What you REALLY should be taking is Marinol. If you titrate this carefully, its doubtful you'll feel stoned, especially on all that speed. Good luck getting this, though! THC is also kinda bad for sleep architecture, AFAIK. :(

There is also Megace (megestrol), but this is a derivative of progesterone and, believe me, you do not want to take it. If you bring it up to your doctor he'll probably treat you for self-injury. ;)

Try my patent-pending Dexedrine Diet(tm): Drink protein shakes, and eat small quantities of wholesome foods throughout the day instead of actual meals, especially fruits, meat, and vegetables. For instance, have a protein shake for breakfast, take an apple and carrots with you to class, have some granola, banana, and soy milk for dinner, perhaps eating a piece of chicken or 2 small sausages later, etc. The key is breaking up two to three moderate meals into portions that can be consumed every 2-5 hours. This is what I did when I was using as much speed as you are, and it worked. I was still 6'2" and 150lbs, but I wasn't malnourished or anything. Of course, there were plenty of times where I would smoke pot so I could eat a normal meal. :) In fact, I had to smoke sometimes even when I was taking only (well, perhaps this is a "lowish" dose to you or I, but not others) 60mg of Ritalin per day.
