Anyone take long-acting+short-acting stimulants?

Posted by utopizen on January 29, 2004, at 12:34:45

I have ADD+Narcolepsy. I'm taking Xyrem, which will take weeks to notice an effect or not on my daytime sleepiness...

but regardless, I take Desoxyn, 50mg/day split between 9AM-6PM. It causes excessive perspiration, to the point Drysol antiperspirant doesn't work, and will need to take Botox for my arms to let me not smell.

but anyway, um, anyone take a long-acting, like Adderall XR or Dexedrine Spansules or Concerta + a short-acting stimulant, like Adderall IR, Ritalin, Dexedrine IR, or Desoxyn?

Desoxyn works just 3-4 hours at 3mg, and like an hour or two if I take my 10mg dose (keep in mind narcolepsy requires slightly higher dosing than the 20mg/day I just needed a year ago when I only had ADD, at 10mg 2x/day).

I feel terrible lulls during the day, to the point of miserable, painful, and dreadful sleepiness. If I read, it's like my ADD activates things, excaberrating my sleepiness, and into a page or two of studying I feel terribly tired.

I have tried all the stimulants, as well as Provigil-- but never a long-acting one, except for Dexedrine Spansules alone (which at 50mg had no affect on my sleepiness).

Does anyone combine the two for their ADD, or possible Excessive Daytime Sleepiness even?? I'm worried if I ask to add Adderall XR it won't work, then I'll have to wait another month and just wait to add on Adderall IR to my current dose of Desoxyn (Adderall IR lasts like 6 hours versus 3 for Desoxyn for me).

I just started dexedrine spansules for add and they work great except they don't kick in fast enough.. so when I wake up in the morning, I take the spansule but it doesn't peak until after my classes are over (in fact i think the spansules don't have their max affect until like 8hrs after dosing).. however I couldn't stand the multiple-day-dosing of only an immediate release stim. my pdoc and I already discussed this and i think i'm going to start taking some immediate-release dexedrine along w/the spansule in the morning.. apparently this is fairly common practice.. hope this helps

Adderall XR is the best time-release formulation of a stimulant I've ever tried. There is little difference between methamphetamine and amphetamine if you adjust for potency (keep in mind that adderall is ~25% l-amphetamine, which is useless). Also, have you ever tried Cylert (pemoline)? I have no idea if it would help you, and it has a reputation for being weak (especially among those looking for euphoria), but--if you have liver function tests done--I imagine taking a 150-225mg dose in the morning it would provide a significant amount of extra wakefulness for at least 12 hours. Let me know what you think or how it goes, I am always fascinated by what narcoleptics have to go through to stay awake. I know when I took it for ADD (though my concentration would probably seem like a samurai's compared to your default state), I could never sleep unless I took 50mg+ of Seroquel. Good luck!
