My son has been on risperdal for many years. He is autistic, so he really cannot tell me what/how he is feeling. This is what I have been seeing lately. He takes only 1 mg. at night. I would say for the first few hours he takes it he seems very quiet, but mostly very obsessive (driven?). It seems that the closer he gets to taking his next dose in the evening, he gets less "obsessive" and happier. He also seems to have some sort of a "rebound" from it.....from being quite sedate, almost flat, to talking to himself...a little hyper. Until the next dose, when he quiets down, but is more obsessive, etc. I have tried to dose it 2 x a day, but he gets quite obsessive, and is not very happy (or so it seems).
I have been trying to figure this out for a long time, I have increased his dose (too flat) and am seriously considering decreasing it again, but he seems to get these rebound behaviors.....almost mania. If I knew that this is typical of withdrawal of rispirdal, I would be okay and wait it out...but everytime that happens, I think that he NEEDS the risperdal to stop the hyperness, etc.
Can anyone help me? I need to help my son and for the life of me, can't figure this one out. All experiences would be appreciated.

I don't know how much this will help but I was briefly on Risperdal for bipolar II a few years ago. What I noticed was that I was initially sedated after my nightime dose but the next morning, early afternoon I gradually became anxious and agitated. My doctor thought it resembled a rebound effect. I ended up discontinuing Risperdal because it was too distressing to deal with the "swings" associated with it. I wish I could be of more help and just though I'd share my experience. Perhaps consider talking to your son's doctor. Good luck. -Stacey

thanks stacey.....it's hard to tell with ben what's going on....I have a call into the doc. It's confusing, because I thought risperdal was for anxiety also; not causing it (could that be his OCD...the anxiety?). Problem is ben is very sensitive to meds and he has been on so many over the years with bad experiences, I am afraid to try anything else...elise

All I know from my experience with Risperdal is I had periods of extreme anxiety. I believe this was a rebound effect (drug wearing off or something) the trouble was even when I tried out a twice daily dosing regime, I still had these bouts of anxiety which caused me to discontinue it. Your son's doctor should be able to give you some advice, but as his mother you know your son best and if his behavior seems different, it may mean Risperdal is not the best choice. And of course, as you say, he may not be able to express what he is feeling.
