I was wondering whether anyone had any succes with
mediating the sexual side effects caused by paxil and other ssri's with other meds.? by what mechanism is this mediation supposed to work? anyone have personal succes or failure story with this? and what other meds do you think might be used for this purpose. i am on paxil and it does wonders for me but it creates major sexual side effects,
thanks

jc,

There was a good discussion about this last week with lots of useful suggestions. Do a search on the topic. I personally use Buspar.

It seems that Remeron, Buspar, Wellbutrin are *often* added to SSRI's, but I have had success with a combo of med dose Serzone and small dose Zyprexa. I think it is a very individual thing, and you may have to try a few different combo's. Good luck.

I'm on Effexor XR and have had good results augmenting it with Wellbutrin for male sexual SE's. I'm augmenting with Remeron now and have dropped the WB. The Remeron helps me sleep and give the same sexual benefit as the WB, without the edginess I get from WB.

I've done a lot of research and asked several doctors because I love Paxil, but I'm male and can't have sex at all because of Paxil. I've tried adding Wellbutrin, Provigil etc. and nothing helps, it's just one of the more potent SSRI's. It really sucks feeling so good in all aspects of life and can't have sex! I've taken other SSRI's that didn't work as good for my anxiety but they also didn't cause me to where I had no drive to even get an erection, and I'm a very sexual person with absolutely no problems. I just started weaning off the Paxil and sticking with the Wellbutrin XL and adding 1mg Xanax XR for anxiety and see what happens.

I think you need to try Ginseng, or Ginkgo Biloba. I have done some research and tried it myself. Gingko Biloba improves blood circulation.

I'm female so I don't know if this will work the same way for you..

SEveral years ago I was on Paxil and it absolutely killed my sex drive. I had a very high sex drive before that. My pdoc put me on Wellbutrin to counteract that problem. It actually helped quite a bit. I don't remember if I had SEs from teh Wellbutrin. Talk to your pdoc. They should have suggestions for your particular case. It will probably be trial and error just like anything else. My pdoc also mentioned the timing of taking the meds (AM vs PM) and taking "med vacations" on the weekends as a possibility for helping with this.

Good luck
