EFFEXOR XR AND ADDERALL XR COMBO

Posted by slushpuppi on December 21, 2003, at 6:07:55

Has anyone tried effexor xr and adderall xr combination? If so, what was your dosing schedule. I just started the effexor xr at 37.5 at bedtime and adderall xr 20mg in am. Thank you.

Yes, I have been on both for years, in addition to Serzone.

I take 30 mg Adderall XR first thing in the morning. Then, after I've eaten breakfast, I take the Effexor XR--225 mg. I take the Serzone (500 mg) at night, about an hour or so before bed.

Hi Noa.

How do you benefit from Adderall? Is there a ADD component to your condition?

Thanks.

Any tiredness from the Effexor? Thank you for your post.

Hi, Scott!

Orignially, the stimulant was added to boost the AD effect of my ADs (orignially it was Prozac, then Paxil, now Effexor), and because I had the 'atypical' symptoms of fatigue, etc.

Even after eliminating the fatigue elements caused by the sleep apnea and hypothyroidism, I continued on stimulants. When I switched from Ritalin SR to Adderall, I noticed a huge difference--I felt calmer and more focused. Adderall XR was even better in not having to have the dose wear off and re-dose, etc.

I do have some ADD like symptoms but it isn't clear if these are innate or med-induced. I suspect a combo. In looking back at my history, one could possibly make a case for exectuve functioning deficits, but these could be attributed to anxiety and depression as easily as they could be attributed to ADD. So, who knows.

In any event, I find the Adderall very helpful. I think it continues to provide AD effect in combo with my ADs (serzone and effexor) and helps with focus.

How are you doing?

I don't think I experience tiredness from the Effexor, but from reading on Babble, it seems there are many people who do. I am one of the other group, who find Effexor activating. But Serzone is very sedating for me, which is part of the reason I take it (to counter the sleep problems from the Effexor)

Hi Noa.

> How are you doing?

Not too well. It seems pointless to complain, though. Thanks for asking.

I know this sounds silly, but I've never tried Zoloft. My previous doctors felt that my failure to respond to Prozac and Paxil indicated a low probability of my responding to any SSRI. They were probably right, but it doesn't make sense to leave this stone unturned. I've never tried Luvox or Serzone either. I guess in a way that gives me something to look forward to. My best hope for now is Cymbalta (duloxetine). Unfortunately, the earliest it would make the pharmacy shelves is summer. If one is partially responsive to Effexor, perhaps they would be responsive to Cymbalta as well. Both drugs are SNRIs.

I think I may ask to try Adderall at some point in time. If it helps at all on a daily basis, it would be worthwhile.

I'm having a tough time hanging on to hope.

FWIW, Serzone is very different from the SSRIs.

The hard part is getting through the initial few weeks of Serzone, which is when a lot of people give up on it. It caused me emotional lability, along with severe grogginess, balance problems, etc. But these wore off after the initial few weeks. I still get very sedated on it, but that is one of the desired effects--I take it at night. By morning, I'm fine (except those first few weeks of treatment).

The combo is important for me. I respond to Effexor but don't tolerate the SEs at higher doses. The serzone adds more AD effect and also counteracts some of the SEs from the Effexor.

Don't give up hope. There are still a few meds to try, and if you are partially responsive to some, maybe a combo will do the trick.

Take care, Scott.

Having huge swings of mood and energy with the Adderall. 2 days on Effexor ..can't see taking another dose!

The only med that I was able to sustain for more than a few weeks was NARDIL but the side effects are also too intense for sustained use.

Where is the EMSAM patch??

Are you bipolar and this is rapid cycling, or is it strictly a med side effect? What if any mood stabilizer are you taking? Maybe one would help?
