I'm new here and severely dep. I stopped Parnate after 15 good years because of BP and tachycardia problems. Just found out I can't go back on it. I did some searches and learned a little about the following question, but would like more info.: What med combos have worked best for those who responded to Parnate but later quit it?
I'm unipolar with no other conditions. Any help would be greatfully appreciated. I'm on huge doses of Clonazepam to keep me from being totally anxious about my predicament. Thanks in advance to any who may reply, as I may not be in shape to thank you later.

Can you try another MAOI like Nardil, or are they all contraindicated? Make sure you are seeing a good psychiatrist regularly, since you don't sound good. Go to the ER if things seem to really be unravelling.You definitely should try to keep your hopes up. Many people have had great results with the newer generation of antidepressants. You might do very well on an SSRI like Prozac or Lexapro. I've heard great things about Effexor, although it didn't work for me. If you are very sensitive to side effects Welbutrin can be a good choice, and it can also be combined safely with SSRI's. You should consult with a good psychiatrist/psychopharmacologist who has experience with MAOIs.
Everyone responds to these drugs differently. It may take several trials before you find one that works for you. Find a good doctor, and don't give up.P.S.--Remember that depression can be as life-threatening as heart disease. If you find that Parnate is really only drug that works for you, perhaps a cardiologist who understands your situation can help you manage the BP and tachycardia without stopping the antidepressant.

Thunder--that's quite a history with Parnate. I'm sure you're frustrated and disappointed that you have to find something else. You probably know a bout Nardil...for some it's as effective as Parnate. Also, the combination of selegiline (deprenyl) and PEA can have a powerful MAOI effect. There are very informative threads about these if you can find them in the PB archives. Most important: keep trying until you find something...even when you don't feel like trying.Depression can be a formidable foe, but it usually succumbs to our willful and stubborn efforts to overcome it.
