Lexapro PMDD

Posted by LynneDa on November 12, 2003, at 12:10:10

Has anyone been diagnosed with PMDD or noticed a monthly cycling of their depressive/anxious moods? I started on Lex 3 weeks ago, 10mg. It was great the first 2 - lifted my "fog" and anxiety, etc. But this is my "bad" week of the month - right before my period. The fog and anxiety are coming back. I spoke to my p-doc and he said to give it another month and see if it dissipates before increasing my dosage. But, I'm not happy with going backward after 2 weeks of feeling pretty normal again! Any similar experiences?

I was dx w/PMDD and started Lex in Feb. Currently @20mg. I was a TOTAL MESS befor w/screaming and uncontrollable ANGER, but Lex has put a stop to all of that. I feel like a normal person again. You should give the Lex a chance to work for you...it took me 9 weeks befor I got *benefits*.

Hang in there, if it works for you like it does for me, the wait will be worth it!~~~8|8

Thanks for responding. My p-doc & therapist told me to wait another month or cycle to see if the Lex will kick in before deciding to up my dose to 15 or 20. It was so great the first 2 weeks and since it seemed to stop working this week, I just wanted to take more! I guess I'll have to be patient. Thanks again for your feedback, I really appreciate it. Have a good weekend!

I was also diagnosed with this PMDD, and a Major depressive disorder my intention when seeing my pdoctor was never to discuss PMS with him so I was amazed that he diagnosed me with PMDD and I felt great also up until the week before my period. I actually forgot about the PMDD and I thought the Lexapro was not working for me and I got even more depressed and with drawn. And I was shocked in the difference of my mood the week before my period and the change after I finally got it. I feel the effects of the Lexapro right now, my period is over. Im sure he will up my dose to 20mg. He even said he might want to do that on my last visit which was my first visit with him. Amazing what hormones can do to ya!

I started on 5mg in Feb. After 4 wks I felt what you describe, much more depressed and upset. Went to 10mg at week 5 and that was good for me until month 5 when I went to 20mg. Still @20mg, and just had my period. Had a couple of days that I felt a little grouchy and uncomfortable but NOTHING like it used to be (uncontrollable anger triggered by the most minor things). My husband was skeptical of me taking meds (never have before) but now I think he's a convert, telling his friend who has a *bi-achy* wife about Lex. Hope it will work as well for you!~~~8|8

Thanks for everyone's posts on the subject. I'm at the end of my 10-day "bad" period of the month and am waiting for the great effects I had in the fisrt 2 weeks of Lex to return.

My husband is very skeptical, but I'm hoping if my behavior improves over the next couple of months and my depression (that he can't understand) lifts a bit, he will no longer look down on the idea. That part's hard to deal with because I've always been very independent and able to take care of myself. To have him look at me as weak for having to get help is hard to bear.

Thanks for your response too, Meehee. It's good to hear about your experience during that particular week. Thought it might've just stopped working during that week. Hopefully, if it doesn't improve next month, my p-doc will allow me to up the dosage and see if that helps. Speaking of horomones and their effects, I'm almost looking forward to menopause to see if it helps my depression and anxiety! Let me know if the 20mg seems to make a difference!

I agree about looking forward to menopause. Im sure alot of women would disagree with that one?
I will be sure to let you know about my experience on 20mg.
