HELP ME!! with hair Loss

Posted by cetus25 on October 26, 2003, at 21:01:47

I currently take Neurontin 800mg 2x's a day. I also started taking Wellbutrin 5 weeks ago. I started at 150mg and just last week they increased it to 300mg. When I got my hair cut yesterday my hairdresser noticed my hair was dramatically thinner than it was about 8 weeks ago when I got it cut. I also take Alesse birth control pill, this I have been on for over a year. I don't think that is the problem. Unless it is the combination of all three. Does anyone have something to help. Thanks you in advance if you have some words that can help.

i take extra supplements to keep this from becoming a problem for me. here is an excerpt copied from another post about depakote and hair loss after doing a search of the archives:

First, make sure that the hair loss is not due to other medical/psychiatric reason(s). For example, underactive thyroid can cause cause hair loss. A psychiatric condition called "trichotillomania" (compulsive hair pulling) can also cause hair loss. If other conditions have been ruled, you are psychiatrically stable with Depakote and must remain on this medication, consider taking daily supplement of selenium and zinc.

The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for selenium is 70 mcg (microgram) daily while the RDA for zinc is 15 mg (milligram). For hair loss due to Depakote, higher doses of selenium/zinc combination is recommended such as 200 mcg selenium and 100 mg zinc. Those who are already taking a multivitamin could change to a brand called "One Source" from Wal-Mart, which already contains 200 mcg of selenium. However, it only has the RDA for zinc, so it would still be necessary to take an additional zinc supplement

but is the mechanism the same? i would imagine that hair loss from wellbutrin or parnate would be a result of additional D2 stimulation in the pituitary releasing higher levels of testosterone ?
depakote i have no clue why it causes hair loss...
though i did read somewhere that they both cause acne and hair loss so maybe it is testosterone related?
