question for MAOI users

Posted by loolot on October 25, 2003, at 13:05:52

I am at that point where I may need to resort to an MAOI for my depression (atypical type)
Wellbutrin worked great for me when it did work, since it has stopped working I have tried many combinations and none has done the job so far
So, my questions are:
What meds did you do WELL on before you tried an MAOI, which MAOi are you on and what are the side effects you have experienced
Also, has an MAOI ever pooped out?
Do these meds cause sexual SEs or weight gain?
Thanks!
Lastly,
Did anyone else do really well on Wellbutrin and then switch successfully to an MAOI?
Thanks!

No meds come near the mighty Nardil. Nardil is a blessing. S/effects (which usually pass): constipation, anorgasmia, sweating, muscle weakness.

No. not on me. 'Poop-out' is nearly always reversible in my experience.

Nardil does usually. But I don't care cause it is so good!

No worries buddy!

Ace.

OK, Ace, we all know that you are Psychobabble's Official Nardil crusader, but please be fair to us Parnate lovers. You left the impression that Nardil might even be better than Parnate. Different strokes for different folks.

Now, to answer the original questions, *I've* had 20+ yrs. of success with Parnate; my side effects have been light-headedness and low blood pressure for the first few days, reduced need for sleep or insomnia, and increased craving for sweets and carbohydrates, leading to weight gain (although most people speak about weight loss), and no effect whatever on sexual libido or performance. Thank God, I never had Parnate poopout, and hope I never will, since I don't believe there's anything else out there that would help me (failures with Remeron, Zoloft, and Moclobemide).

i think i did pretty well on my first SSRI, paxil...... though maybe that's just because i had nothing to compare it to ...

anyways i'm finding parnate to have no side effects, actually strangely enough there is a decrease in libido, but i expect this to only be for the first week or so (from previous experience)

No. I always mention that Parnate can be wonderful for some people and that Parnate has more consistency over any SSRI. However, between Nardil and Parnate, and I have the clinical trials and anecdotes backing me (I mean hundreds of clinical trials and anecdotes!) Nardil is more consistent. Every now and then you here of negative responses to Parnate, but Nardil, out of hundreds, has maybe 2-3 non-respondents.

Parnate can be great- I fully concede this. For instance MelD did OK on Nardil, but Parnate really helped her.

Please believe me that I am not projecting my own bad experience of Parnate onto these statements. And it is wonderful, truly wonderful, it works so well for you.

I am not being biased because of my love of Nardil- the reason I tried it was because I had NEVER seen so many positive response.

In closing, I believe both are great meds, however, I still think, Nardil is more consistent.

Ace.

Paxil. It helped a very good deal, but not tremendously. i was still quite depressed, but it was not as painful a depression. It became more of an empty, numb depression. Paxil was also quite helpful for my anxiety (SP/SA)-- moreso than for my depression actually.
i've been on 60mg Nardil for about 2 months. i have all the damn anticholinergic side effects (constipation, dry mouth/nose, blurred vision, etc.); decreased libido; anorgasmia. Occasional fatigue, especially on days i don't have caffeine.

> Also, has an MAOI ever pooped out?

Not yet, but only 2 mo.s of course. i hope with all my soul it never will.

> Do these meds cause sexual SEs or weight gain?
Nardil- usually. Parnate- usually not (often the opposite).

i hated Wellbutrin. It did nothing for my depression and just made everything else worse. However, you might do quite well on Parnate. It is much more similar to Wellbutrin than is Nardil. And Parnate is a much better drug than Wellbutrin, imo. But Nardil may very well may prove a blessing to you, as it has with myself and so many others. i am so grateful for Nardil.
Good luck.
