Effexor - Severe Abdominal Pain

Posted by mb7522 on September 12, 2003, at 8:23:04

Hello,
My wife is now on a 225 mg dose of Effexor XR and she has been suffering intense abdominal pain since increasing the dose. We have been at our family GP and then landed in the ER. She was tested for Crohns, Kidney Stones, Gall Stones, Appendecitis and a few others and ALL came back negative. They even gave her an enema for constipation. After 4 days in hospital and NOTHING, finally the doctor suggested might be anxiety.
I have read that Effexor might cause abdominal pain. She thinks she's going nuts. Has anybody ever had these effects?

WORST of ALL the hospital did not administer her Effexor during her stay, now she's suffering from withdrawl.

Pierre

Pierre,
I have had stomach pains on effexor - this is a known side effect. I wish some of these doctors would read up on the meds. What does the doc say that perscribed it?

Thank for writting

I have contacted his office and he will call me back ASAP. Meanwhile my wife is in the feotal position crying and in pain. I feel helpless towards her pain but I know what I'm doing is helping her (calling doctors and checking the web for info). Right now Prayers for her would be nice. :-)
What was your pain like? Dull at moments and then sharp like a knife? Aroung the navel all the way to the back?

I have had that type of pain in the abdomin from effexor - I think that can happen on SSRIs - I also had that pain with seroquel.
Recently coming off effexor - I had pain near my liver for several days - then horrible stomach cramps.
I will say a prayer - your wife is going to feel better. You are doing all the right things to help her.

When I was taking Effexor~it actually helped my stomach pain. I went through exactly what you say your wife did!!!!! I never did get to 225mg though.
I haven't read the above posts yet, but I'm hoping she got back on the Effexor~I missed ONE day and I went nuts.
Good luck to you both:-)

Pierre, Did the doc call back???
GOD~~I know how your wife feels!!! I went through years of that pain. My prayers are definately with her.
Prevacid~a medication used for GERD, helped me tremendously! It took away the pain~but I also did some therapy too.
My pain was dull, aching, BAD. Around the naval, but never went to my back. Did she get her kidneys checked?

Thank you for your messages.

Yes our Doc called back and we see him Monday.

Right now She is suffering from withdrawl symptoms of increased depression (back to square one), very weepy, and self doubting of getting better. Also self acusations of beeing a freak. They have given her pain medication Toradol (Ketorolac Tromethamine) for her abdominal pain but it has no effect on it.

If you have any medical/pharmacological evidence of this kind of side effect please direct me to it.
Thanx. :-)

The Doctor at our local hospital tested everything. From Kidney Stones, Gall Stones, Bladder infection, Appendicitis, etc. Bloodwork, Urinalysis, THE WHOLE THING. Found NOTHING.
If it is Side Effects from the Effexor that would explain all negative test results.
Did they say it was Effexor side effects for you?

I hope she can get some rest this weekend.
Keep us posted:-)

Please tell her a complete stranger is wishing her hope and that she is NOT a freak~no matter what! Not that this will cure her, but I really hope she starts to feel better!!!!!!!
If I find any kind of info~I will surely direct you to it. Maybe someone here can. I'm not a doctor, but can look up some things for you!

Was she checked for pancreatitis? I was prescribed a med once and they told me to be on the lookout for it just in case. The doc said the pain would be around the bellybutton and might go round to the back. Since that's what you mentioned in the previous post, I thought it was at least worth a mention.

Pierre, I hope all goes well at the doctor's Monday. Please let us know how everything is going.
Also~The FDA just approved a new IBS medication.
(which I'm thinking it sounds like what she *may* have) but it surely could be from the Effexor.
Anyway, the new medication is called Zelnorm.
It does not cure IBS and is not indicated for the diarrhea-predominant form of IBS, BUT it does reduce pain and discomfort in the abdominal area.
Just a thought, maybe that would help her?
Good luck!:-)

Pierre,
How is your wife doing? How did everything go with the pdoc? I bet it turns out to be from the effexor. Effexor is a great med but can have nasty side effects on some people.

Well the visit went ok.

The doc is weening her off the Effexor slowly, It's working on her depression but the side-effects are slowly taking over her battle. On the grand scale of things... side-effects making you feel bad or the depression... some might say stick with it others... get off! We chose to get off and try something else.

He is also putting her on a very strick diet to rule out any gastro-intestinal food related illnesses (allergies, crohns, etc.) We'll see in a few weeks how things are.

The withdrawl symptoms she had because the hospital made an error are going away. Have to say it was quite entertaining watching her sleep. (Lots of sleep walking activities like dream shopping, dancing, kick-boxing *yeah*) Brain Zaps were not fun to watch. :(

Boy those medecines are really doing weird things to your system. I used to be on Zoloft and I periodicly had moment of Hyper Reality, where I was more aware of every little thing. Almost had an accident when driving. Road lines looked to interesting to watch. Bizarre. (I won't get into what it did with my libido... what libido?!)

Anyways thank you for your support.

Thank you for checking back in:-)
It sounds like it was a combo of the Effexor and some gastrointestinal goings on. Maybe she is allergic to something. Wheat Gluten-Intolerance is very common and of course lactose intolerance.
Effexor really helped me with my tummy problems~I'm sorry to hear it didn't seem to for her.
You take care and God Bless you both:-)

I got the same thing from Effexor, started in Aug 2000, docots did a lot of tests and only found tenderness in the liver area, otherwise absolutely nothing. I was told it was in my head, and one doctor said that its in my head, and the cure is Prozac, i came to realize all the doctors know how to do is give you drugs, and more drugs to counter the initial drugs... The one thing they gave me that had some effect was Motilium (Domperidone), which empties your stomach in 20 min. I started looking for the cure myself, reading any stomach related book i could find, i tried many things, the onyl thing i found that helped partially was HCL tablets (hydrochloric acid tablets). They can be found at some health food stores, and provide PARTIAL relief, i would take up to 20 500mg tablets per meal, when the recommended maximum dose was 2 per meal or 6 per day. Anyway, i saved up all my money for months and went to a naturopath, and i'm improving, slowly, hes given me several homeopathic ,one chinese, an enzyme supplement and several other things that are slowly making a difference, my suggestion is for her to see one herself, i could tell you exactly what i am taking, but it may not help her completely, since everyone has different body chemistries. If you really want to know, just ask. I stopped taking Effexor in Dec 2000, after i was throwing up so much, even without eating anything, i had to be injected with extremly high doses of gravol several times.
