How long will it take to rid the body of Klonopin?

Posted by KRM123 on September 14, 2003, at 16:56:50

Hi, I was just researching on possible effects of instant withdrawal of Klonopin. I have been feeling real crappy ever since I quit all of my sleeping aids. How long would it take for the Klonopin to completely leave my system and not have any effect on me?

Thanks

Not sure how long the clonazepam takes to flush out, but I think you are feeling crappy because of lack of restful sleep. It can take a few weeks for normal sleep architecture to reestablish itself. You may not be getting enough deep sleep, but that should correct itself with time. Good luck.

Hi, your post is disturbing. . .are you considering stopping the Klonopin cold turkey? What's your present dose? If you're thinking of stopping it without a slow taper, you're asking for trouble. You could experience a serious reaction such as seizures.

Cubby- that sounds scary. Well I haven't been on Klonopin very long and it wasn't clear to me if it was something I could take whenever I needed or all the time. My pDr. made it sound like I could use it as a sleep aid too. I've been on and off it for like 2 weeks now I think. My dose was very more than .5mg. Yes I did quit cold turkey- all of my meds (except Zoloft) about a week ago. I am feeling better- just unbelieveable hunger lately and spaced out tired feeling. Thanks for your advice.

I wonder how much people really value their health when they do things like this ?
Want to shock you neurology and have months of
side effects ? Quit cold turkey !

Well StJames- I appreciate your tactful reply. I know I am really dumb for quitting anything "cold turkey". I have learned in the past that doing so is a very bad thing. I guess I didn't get the right info from my Dr. I got the impression that it was okay to take this med whenever I wanted and it would only last for a few hours in my system. I didn't take this drug everyday for 2 weeks- it was just an on and off thing- took it when needed. I am just scared and don't know what these withdrawal effects are from...

It is not how long it takes a med to clear your body that effects the withdrawal period. Far from it. I am also conserned that you stopped your AD at once. Much the same here, it is not how long the meds clear from your body, but the adjustments made, which last far longer than the meds effect in your body.

yes, I remember only taking Wellbrutrin and Lexapro last March for only 2 weeks (separate) and didn't feel the after effects go away for like a month. I guess I just figured the Klonopin, Sonata, Trazodone didn't really cause any withdrawal effects because of the short term life. My pDoc is supposed to call today so I can talk to him. I usually research and know what I'm doing and taking but I just got back to college and things have been hectic- I just called him and didn't have time to think about consequences.
I am feeling really spaced out and tired all the time...who knows when I'll kick this. Could it be possible to have permanent effects?!! I remember I never really recovered from the Lexapro- it made me soooo sluggish.
Thanks for your help.

Hi KRM,
Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. . .I'm a bit confused regarding your Klonopin. You said that you quit cold turkey and yet you are still taking it on again/off again. "Cold turkey" means a sudden and complete stoppage. So, what exactly are you doing with the Klonopin now?
From what I gather, it seems that if you've been taking some of it every few days, you've maybe managed to avoid the unpleasant, possibly serious effects of sudden withdrawal.
But I also wonder about your doctor. It sounds like there's some essential communication lacking on both sides. I suggest you get in touch with him and get yourself back on track regarding the Klonopin, and set yourself a definitive tapering schedule--just to be on the safe side.. As far as your other meds are concerned, I have no experience with them, but you need to have a knowledgeable pdoc to guide you through a gradual tapering. And don't make assumptions on your own (e.g. short half-life, etc.). Consult with a good pdoc and if you have doubts about him/her, then post your questions here first before making any drastic changes.
