Budgie - Parnate update

Posted by mattdds on September 9, 2003, at 13:35:12

Hey Chris,

Just got your other message from earlier.

I'm going in today to see what the doc says about the Parnate (whether to lower the dose or possible switch to Nardil). I'm hoping he has some good ideas. I was really digging the Parnate.

What you described earlier (i.e. dizziness) sounds much more like hypotension than high blood pressure. High blood pressure is typically asymptomatic (unless you are dangerously high). My dad would walk around with a BP of 200/110 without symptoms. Luckily, a routine physical with a GP doc picked it up.

How are you doing on the Parnate? I miss that stuff already. Are your side effects getting better? I bet they do!

Any luck with getting a better psychiatrist? Or are you sticking with the same dude?

Take care,

Matt

Hi Matt,

I guess you'll have already seen your doc by the time you read this. How'd it go? What do you *want* to do, by the way- switch to Nardil or try to find some way to live with the Parnate SEs? It definitely does seem to be a tricky drug in a lot of ways- I'm still trying to figure it all out.

I went out and bought a BP monitor yesterday ($75!). So far all of my readings have been from normal to high. Definitely *not* low. Of course I was a bit stressed yesterday with tons of work to do, but at the same time, my BP has always been very low (sans meds). It's all weird. I guess I'll just keep checking over time.

The noticeable SEs are disappearing day by day. Today I'm feeling pretty good again.

My therapist at school is checking in to see if it's possibly to switch to the other staff psychiatrist. He seems to think I have a big issue with people who I don't feel listen to or really *see* me. But I guess that's a topic for another time...

I really hope you get everything all worked out. Have you noticed a recurrence of the depression since you cut back? Are you still OK in school and everything?

Take care, talk to you soon. :-)

Chris

Chris,

Indeed, I did go to my doc yesterday. I did *want* to try Nardil or find some way to make the Parnate work without my BP spiking. He denied my request to do either, unfortunately. He thought I was doing well enough with just the Klonopin, that it just wasn't worth the risk.

He has a goood point, I really am not doing bad at all. I took an anxiety inventory when I went to his office, and I was only "high normal". This is post-Parnate. BTW, absolutely no detectable "withdrawal" syndrome.

I guess the MAOI's were more of an experiment. I did want to see if there was anything to help ease my symptoms of derealization / depersonalization (the most stubborn symptoms I have, by far). Parnate did help this substantially. But everything else is under control.

For some reason, I am able to function well, even when I was at my worst point (which was really bad in 2001). So, yeah, I'll function fine without the Parnate (although I'd be *better* with it).

My MAOI experience is comforting in that I know if I ever get as depressed as I did in 2001, there is always one last line of defense. Although, I made it out last time, with only CBT and Klonopin!

I hope you continue to get better, Parnate is a great drug, and I must admit I'm a bit jealous you get to stay on it.

Best to you,

Matt

Hey Matt,

I suppose that's very GOOD news. I mean the eventual goal of most of us is to ideally live one day med-free, and if you're doing well enough to be enjoying life without an AD, then that's wonderful!

> I hope you continue to get better, Parnate is a great drug, and I must admit I'm a bit jealous you get to stay on it.

I should be the one jealous of you, if you're at that point where you don't need it! I think I'll get there eventually, maybe when I finally make it through school. But no hurry at all.

I haven't had insomnia at all recently, hence no added time to post on PB. My days are filled trying to digest Kant's third Critique right now. One of these days we'll chat cognitive stuff over on psychological. I read most of that thread you were referring to- fascinating stuff!

Talk to you later. :)
Chris
