Will Buspar work at less than 20 mgs a day?

Posted by Aeryn on August 28, 2003, at 18:35:08

Taking Buspar and Prozac, I already notice the help from the Buspar at 2 weeks (prozac working fine too). But I can't seem to up my dosage of the Buspar from 17.5 a day to 20 (and then on to 30 ultimately) without feeling wiped out and getting blurry vision.

Doc says 30 is the dosage it works at, not less. But I already feel a little better (don't think terrible things will happen all the time).

I am going to keep it at 17.5 for another week then try to up it again.

But I'd love to hear others' experience here.

Hi,

I have been on Buspar for about a year! I first titrated up to 60mg which is the max, but could not tolerate it, so I went down to 45mg for awhile, but now I'm at 30mg. I take 15mg in the am, and 15mg at night. I also take Klonopin for anxiety, so my pdoc and I thought MAYBE I could reduce the number of meds I'm on (I'm a walking drugstore!) by stopping the Buspar.

Bad move - within a few days of being off the Buspar I began to feel bad so I asked to be put back on the 30mg level.

You sound like you might be sensitive to meds (I am!) so if a low dose of Buspar works for you, stick with it. You can always increase it should you feel the need.

Buspar has a kind of a bad rap as being weak, like a placebo, etc., but I just think it is a gentle, subtle med that works effectively.

Hi!

when you use Buspar as an augmentor, you can find efficacy at as little as 10mgs. 30mgs is the recommended dose when Buspar is used alone. You have plenty of serotonin action with the ssri, and this is compounded by the Buspar. So tell your doc you want to stay where you are! It takes 4 weeks to kick in completely, so you can wait and see then if you want to increase it.

Good luck!

Excellent Advice from you both, Thanks! A (nm) (nm)
