Nardil + Provigil = OK?

Posted by jerrympls on August 27, 2003, at 16:25:49

Has anyone used the combination of an MAOI plus Provigil? I've read that it does NOT inhbit MAO-B, but that there has not been any studies combining the two.

The nardil works great for me - but I am so worn out and tired I can barely work a full day. I've heard of some using small amounts of Ritalin with an MAOI - but my doctor (a resident) is afraid to try any med that her PDR says is contraindicated.

Anyone out there have any experience with Provigil or Ritalin to augment an MAOI safely?

Thanks in advance!!!
Jerry

So, I did some more research and decided to take a small dose of one of the last provigils that I had from a previous prescription - and it worked like a charm - no interactions - no ill feelings - I was just more awake and able to do things around the house, etc.

I see my psych doc tomorrow and I want to ask to add Provigil to help augment the Nardil - but do I tell her I "experimented" and it helped me greatly or do I just try to persuade her to at least let me try it? I want to be honest - but am I going to be labled as a "druggie" or something bad because I took things into my own hands? Sure, it's not the safest thing to do - but I'm also not stupid and have never added other meds before.

So - if anyone is out there - I need advice.....please

thanks

I was taking Provigil with Nardil for about three months at one point -- there should be no problems with normal doses. High doses (i.e. 800-1,000mg) tend to raise blood pressure, so those should obviously be avoided. But apparently from what you said you're not going to need a high dose.

I don't know your pdoc, of course, but I've always found it better just to tell the truth. Maybe not about experimenting with amphetamines, barbiturates, or opioids, but Provigil is not very useful as a recreational drug unless about one gram is taken (and at this dose, I swear, I couldn't distinguish it from a low dose of MDMA). Because of its very low potential for abuse, I wouldn't worry about your doctor thinking you a "druggie" just because you tried it once to see if it relieves your symptoms. Just be sure to tell her that you did research before combining Provigil with an MAOI, or else she may become a bit upset. :-)

If you do tell her, i would take the above advice. But i'm not sure if you should tell her-- many docs might get worried if their patient is taking stuff on their own w/ another med, esp. an MAOI. i do stuff like that all the time, and i know Provigil is not very dangerous at all, even w/ an MAOI, but you never know how pdocs are gonna react-- just be sure she's not gonna take you off the Nardil if you tell her.
