PARLODEL (BROMOCRIPTINE) side effects? please.

Posted by davex on August 24, 2003, at 8:51:58

Hi to all and apologize for my bad english!
I have recently done blood exam, and they shown an xhigh level of Prolactine (63 when norm range:4-13) due probably to the use of AD and neuroleptics. These caused to me a great loss of libido and sex desire.
My doc would like to put me on Parlodel (bromocriptine) that is a Prolactine-antagonist and an antidepressant too.
I've never eard anything about this med, do you have any experience to share? AD effects and side effects using this med? any info will be greatly appriciate!
Thanx you all for your help!
Dave

Parlodel(bromocriptine) and similar dopaminergics are theoretically pro-sexual substances, but individual responses vary. I have used parlodel to enhance libido and found it to be moderately effective, although the common side effect (nausea) of this substance will dampen sexual desire also. Nausea can be reduced or minimized if you keep the initial dose very low and take it just before you go to bed. Start from an extremely low dose and allow your body to tolerate the side effects before you increase the dosage.

Any other side effects except nausea?
How much time for showing (right)effects?
Thanx again indeed for your help!!!

Parlodel has a benign side effect profile which makes it suitable for long-term management of diseases like parkinsonism. It is a neuroprotective agent which prevents dopamine depletion. I didn't experience any unwanted effects from it except that nausea and drowsiness at the initial stage. My starting dose was 1.25 mg at night, which still made me drowsy and nauseated the next day. The good news is nausea is not going to have any dominance beyond one week, but whenever you try to increase the dosage, this sickness will dominate as an inevitable evil and sex will be the last thing you wish during this period as the nauseant effect of this substance is so profound. Once you reach the therapeutic dosage of this medication (this varies from person to person)and overcome the sea-sickness like adverse effect, you will start to feel the effect. Effect will evident in all departments of sexuality, including desire, erection and ejaculation. (Again I remind you, individual responses may vary). I am taking 2.5 mg at night which still maintains the positive effects, although the initial high in libido is not so profound now. This may be due to the fact that I am accustomed to the heightened libido for a long time.

There is another novel dopaminergic called dostinex which is being tried for the same purpose with promising early results. Dostinex is a very long acting drug without the adverse effects of parlodel. Unfortunately it is very expensive right now, because the manufacturer has patent protection. If parlodel doesn't work for you dostinex will be the next option.
Good luck to you, keep me updated.

Hi Hiba and everybody!
this is the strangest thing that happend to me on a drug!
I, as i posted, am hyperprolactemic cause use of AD and neuroleptic (val 87, norm range 4-18).
This caused me great loss of libido and sex desire.
So i began with Parlodel (bromocriptine) half-pill before sleep.
The first week was GREAT, i was extremely excited with a great desire about sex. No side effects reported.
Exactly after a week, this right effect fade copletely, and appeared side effects like dizzyness, somnolece, fatigue, ad nausea!
I have no changed dosed, no added any drug, nothing was changed since the beginning of the therapy!
Could any of you explain what damn happned to me?Now i do not know what i should do: to stop bromo?
Reduce dosage? Increase dosage? Every of this possibility seems to me to be wrong!
Help please!
Thanx
Dave

Yes, it happens. But don't give up. Half a pill is not likely to do any good. You will have to increase the dosage. Let those side effects resolve, and then increase your dose to one pill before bed. Look if it helps. Besides this there are plenty of ways to deal with the tolerance. First try this method. And if it not works...

Employ at least a three day drug free holiday. This will help your system resolve itself and refresh. Then start to dose again. Look if it helps. Otherwise....

Adjust the timing of dosing. Take the dose right three hours before sex.

Don't worry. If it worked for the first week, it should work and the tolerance is less likely. But all you need is patience.
Keep me updated
