Posted by pendulum on August 1, 2003, at 11:09:57

Has anyone used risperdal to boost prozac?

I'm getting tired of changing meds. and am very depressed with no one to talk to

Hi.

I'm sorry that you are so alone. I know the feeling. For a very long time, Psycho-Babble was my only social outlet. It did make me feel connected.

I once added Risperdal to Parnate and found that it did have some antdipressant effects. Although I think the chances of Zyprexa providing relief are better, I can understand the reluctance in taking something that has the potential to produce so much weight gain. I like Abilify. Of the neuroleptics I have tried, it has produced the best antidepressant effect. Since studies have shown that Prozac + Zyprexa is better than either drug alone for treating resistant cases of depression, Prozac + Risperdal or Prozac + Abilify sound like sound alternatives.

I hope that posting on PB gives you a sense of connectedness.

thanks scott-

i have been on so many meds over the last 6 mos.
i wake up with the worst anxiety--it consumes me.

i'm hoping the anxiety was caused by coming off a med and that it goes away
if it doesn't i can't take much more.

I took Prozac and Resperadal together for a few years. It helped lift me up at first when I was way down. However, over time I felt it also kept me from getting much higher. As mentioned Resperadal has a weight gain potential which is depressing in itself. Longterm Prozac use also often has some unpleasant sexual side effects. Sorry to be so negative. We all have such different responses to these meds, you can't really use another person's experience to go by.

I have found Lamictal to be the best med I've ever been on. I see a lot of posts here about people having disappointing poop out experieces with it, but that has not been the case with me. Also when I am super low like you are talking about, Pindolol (aka Visken) has been a decent short term fix just to take the edge off while I wait for something to kick in.

Hang in there and keep searching, something will work. Stay after those doctors make them work for you.

Have you ever tried Nuerontin? I think it helps with stuff like that. Also my old pal Pindolol.
