I don't think anybody believes it is a magical cure for depression. At best, SAM-e has mild anti-depressand and mood elevation effects. Everything I have read on the subject reports that it may be helpful for those with MILD depression.

Personally, I took it for six months and experienced no positive results. But, of course, everone is different.

All I got from it was brain-blowing headaches which got worse everyday I took it. About 4 days.

I got astonishing results with Sam-e mostly as an augmenter.

I took SAM-e for most of 2001. I took it in doses of 800mg to 1600mg per day. At first, I felt it was giving me a mild tension relief in my body (My depression runs on the anxiety side.) But after a while, it either wore off or I couldn't tell if it was having any affect. Sometimes, since SAM-e affects dopamine (that's what I read, at least), it did seem to be stimulating to me and provoke anxiety too (kind of like a mild Wellbutrin). Richard Brown, in his book Stop Depression Now, argues very persuasively for SAM-e. For me, SAM-e was just so-so; overall, not great. I agree that it's worth a try though.

i take 1200mg's a day of Naturemade brand Sam-e along with my Paxil and I respond extremely well to it. Shocking really, that an OTC supplement can help so much. My life would be very different without it.

Sam-e gave me the worst and deepest pimples I've ever had. No mood elevation I could discern.

Hi there...I was on it for a brief period...maybe 6 weeks? It seemed to work well but then I started to crash...on the flipside, it IS working well for a friend of mine. My advice would be to go for it. You have nothing to lose (but your depression) and (therefore) everything to gain! I was a little bummed about it not working for me at first. I have since gone back to my "old standby"--Effexor.
