HELP!! Yohimbe + Effexor/WB = Bad Results

Posted by OWHolmes on July 29, 2003, at 17:24:04

OK, here's the situation. Like many taking effexor (300 mg and 200 WB) I get good AD results but bad sexual side effects. Viagra works but only in the physical department does not make me more in the mood. OK, so last night, right before bed I took two pills of GNC yohimbe alkaloids, or something, never tried the stuff before and thought what the hell? Rec'd dose is one pill but since I never really respond to natural remedies, I thought whyn not use both. Well, by the time me and my girlfriend got in bed I was getting really cold, when I usually am really hot from effexor. My jaw just kept chattering. Luckily, insomnia has never been a problem for me during my many years of depression, whether or not I am on meds. But last night, I was completely unable to sleep and my heart was pounding and my jaw shaking, teeth chattering. I tried to read, tried to watch TV, tried to get back in bed, kept waking my girlfriend up. Around 3 AM, I took a mg of Klonopin (usually only use .5/day), slowed down my heart but Finally at 5AM I went home and tried to sleep in my own bed. Did not fall asleep until 7 AM, around the time I usually go to work, had to call in sick.

Does anyone know if this is a normal reaction? Is Yohimbe contraindicated with Effexor or WB?
Anyone have any thoughts?
Also, strangely enough, the stuff did work, I had to take care of myself twice in the night.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Sorry to say, but it is nice to know someone had the same reaction to Yohimbe that I've had. I've had the same reaction on and off meds. Anxiety, the sense I'm turning to ice, etc... it is one herb I stay away from.

Do you have trouble sleeping on it too? When you say turn to ice, you get cold, right? Man, that's good to hear that you have the same reaction.

From everything i've read about Yohimbe, it seems pretty dangerous. It definately raises blood pressure and probably has a strong stimulant effect also. Have you ever tried Maca, available in the health food stores? I have found it to be amazing. My sex drive just won't quit, granted i'm not on an ssri but am on Wellbutrin. It has none of the adverse side effects of Yohimbe. Also, horny goat weed is supposed to be very good.

effexor, sex drive and alternatives

God knows what is actually in these over the counter aphrodisiacs. There have been some liability law suites about those things and the one of the products defense lawyers revealed it was just a massive dose of caffine.

Taking one substance to counter the effects of another is a slippery slope. I finally woke up when they suggested a fifth med for my cocktail. Find an AD that works for your depression and doesn't kill your sex drive.

Effexor messed me up in the sex department. Not being abel to have normal erections is very frustrating. There are so many different meds out there and they have such different effects on us all. keep searching. For me Lamictal has worked very well. Libido is back, depression is usually greatly improved. Who knows what will work for you. I am sure something will.

So....you finally get relieved(from an AD) but then find you can't relieve yourself.Thats a joke.
What a cruel world it is...Heres my take-nothing works except running away from that 5ht ....far,far away. Its funny they give people Wellbutrin to counterattack and the people on Wellbutrin have sexual side effects.lol
Imho, nuttin works. Not adding buspar,Wellbutrin,Periactin,Yohimbine, amantadine, drug holidays..nuttin...Viagra....it makes my nose so stuffy and I get all hot and flushed..umm,no fun there.Ritalin did something but it was weird. You need to A)Get off the drug and switch or B)fix your libido...Testosterone is king!!!!

HenryO got it right he ran from the 5ht.
Take care

Yes, those results were normal. I took yohimbe extract a couple years ago while I was taking Zoloft (I'm female) and it made my heart race and was like taking a stimulant diet pill-restless and anxious. I threw the stuff away for I knew it wasn't for me. I later got a great book on different supplements so I wouldn't make the same mistake again. The title is "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" by Phyllis and James Balch.

Here is what they say:

Yohimbe (pausinystalia yohimbe). Bark. Phytochemicals: ajmaline, corynantheine, corynanthine, tannin, yohimbine. Increases libido and blood flow to erectile tissue. May increase testosterone levels. Yohimbine, a key component of this herb, is sold as a prescription medication. Caution: May induce anxiety, panic attacks, and hallucinations in some individuals. May also cause elevated blood pressure and heart rate, headache, dizziness, and skin flushing. Should not be used by women or by anyone with high blood pressure; heart, kidney, or liver disease; or a psychological disorder. Should not be combined with foods rich in tyramine, such as cheese, red wine, and liver, as this may increase blood pressure to dangerous levels."
