Switch from Risperdal to Abilify:

Posted by TJO on July 19, 2003, at 7:54:27

:

Some people were interested in this last week. I am in the 10th week of trying to switch over from Risperdal 3 mg to Abilify. Its still too soon to tell but today I feel "normal" for the first time in a long time. I went from 3 mg to 2 mg of Risperdal last Monday and am taking 30 mg of Abilify and switched up from 20 mg last Friday. I feel a real antidepressant effect from the Abilify and only had a few very transitory side effects so far. Its nice to feel this well. My other meds are Wellbutrin 150 mg and Neurontin 1200 mg.

This is for bipolar. I go into a mixed state with delusional depression when I get ill. I also like being on 2 antipsychotics at once. The combioned effect of both together is nice and better than Risperdal by itself. If I can't come off Risperdal entirely by titrating down I would try combining Abilify with Seroquel next.

YES! Risperdal seems to be very sedating etc. It makes me feel foggy headed too and there were some sexual side effects. Also weight gain and at 3 mg I had no menstrual periods. All this is why I want to take a different antipsychotic. At 2 mg of Risperdal the side effects are less-I got my period back and have lost 9 lb. I haven't tried Zyprexa.

cool.... so you are not just taking the abilify for psychosis but it also helps keep your mood stable?

Yes it keeps my mood stable. I also feel a true antidepressant effect at 30 mg.

Glad you want to try it, I like this med, it seems to agree with me.

Hi guys.

I have also found that Abilify exerts an antidepressant effect, and probably contributes to stabilizing my mood in the treatment of bipolar depression.

what dose did you have to get to to notice 1) antidepressant and 2) stabilizing effect?

Hi CC.

I seem to get positive results at 10mg. I haven't tried any lower dose, so I can't recommend a minimum dosage to you.

I have absolutely no weight gain nor sexual side effects. Abilify seems to be a good drug. The only question that remains open is what are the long-term side effects or adverse events.

No, Abilify doesn't seem to cause sexual side effects. :-)
