Topamax dosage for Cognitive side effects?

Posted by Nycole on July 16, 2003, at 16:06:04

I am taking Topamax 150mg. a day. I have been taking it for a month now. I also take effexor xr. I haven't had any of the cognitve side effects at all yet, like what people call "the stupids", loss of memory, blurred vision, etc. Can anyone tell me what dosage they were on when they felt these kind of side effects? I just want to know in case my doc wants to push my dosage up to 200 mg. Thanks!

I would say if you haven't had them yet, at 150 mg's,
you probably won't. I got the stupid's right away, at
a very very low dose. Do you think you need to go higher?

I think I may need to up my dosage because although it has been helping me, it's just not pulling me out of the depression like I had hoped. I have clinical depression and it comes and goes. About every 3 years I have a terrible bout with it and I am having it right now. I have been on the Topamax for over a month and I feel like I need to increase it. Also, my doctor chose Topamax because the last med I was on made me gain a lot of weight which has also made my depression much worse. Topamax is supposed to help with weight loss, but it hasn't yet for me so I tought it might at 200mg.

Cognitive side effects increase with dose but decrease with time... i started to get *really* stupid, along about 200mg, but had no effect like that before that dose. But i am pretty small, BMI of 16.2, so that might have had an effect. Interestingly, adding verapamil seemed to reverse a lot of the stupidity... i dunno, maybe the increase of blood flow to the brain, or something. I was supposed to go all the way up to 200mg twice per day, but i was already so skinny and losing weight (got down to BMI of 15.8 on 200mg) that the doc pulled me off it... none to soon, either, man i hated Dopeymax.

I had severe dysnomia at 400mg and impotence...as an alternative you may want to ask your doc about Zonegran, several studies have shown similar weight loss assocted with this med
