Folate/B-12 cause mania???

Posted by jay on July 9, 2003, at 1:21:52

This is mostly my own observation...but I do recall coming across some studies warning these suppliments are very energizing, and can worsen both OCD and mania. Yet other studies say the opposite. I do recall my brief stint with these suppliments, and I didn't like the restless energy they caused. Mind you I took MASSIVE amounts, so maybe that was the key. Any other experiences to share?

For what it's worth, I can't take ANY B-Vitamin, at any amount, in the evening, or it causes insomnia.

In certain doses, yes, folicin messes with me. At 1200mcg, it made me quite energized--not quite manic, per se, but *extremely* restless. So i backed off the dose, and later titrated to 2400mcg (i take Lamictal, i want to avoid the effects on folate metabolism... i am not quite sure this is a high enough dose, but i don't want to go higher at this point without further medical advice).

One thing, though, is that folicin can induce metabolism of some drugs--this *may* be part of its effect on inducing mania, but i don't really know.

As you've correctly surmised, the critical issue is dose. Anything, taken in excess, will have adverse effects. Just stay away from MASSIVE.
