Birth Control Pill Makes me Depressed

Posted by Alara on June 28, 2003, at 6:43:02

Uh oh.. I have a little dilemma:

I stopped taking the pill late last year following a temporary break up with my boyfriend and have not been able to go back on it with success.

Earlier this year I tried both Nordette and Triphasal. Both times I sank into a deep depression within days; my mood lifted again as soon as I discontinued the pill.

I am currently happy with my life and I cannot afford to get depressed!! However, I'm constantly flirting with pregnancy (as my boyfriend and I are using less than reliable birth control methods).

My boyfriend and I both hate condoms. Any solutions out there (aside from abstinence :-) )?

Well, not to be a jerk, but stop being selfish and use a condom. Ouch, I know, but if you end up pregnant...what will you do? Have a baby you don't want? Or worse? I'm sure that situation will cause much more depression than finding a b/c pill that is ok for you. If you and your boy are on and off a condom might not be such a bad idea. I know you don't like them, but find a way, or just go back on a pill. There are dozens and dozens to try. Abstinence, not necesarry if you and he have any creativity. Have you tried taking the pill before you go to bed? This sometimes can limit the side effects.

IUDs have a high user satisfaction and don't cause depression. A diaphragm is another option.

Different pills have different reactions in individuals and you might try some other brands. In practice the pill is far reliable than condoms or diaphragms. The Mirena intrauterine coil may be a good option, especially for a mother.Having it fitted for those without children is quite painful.I usually fit them using misoprostol 400 micrograms inserted in the vagina the previous night.

The pill made me depressed too....and I don't like
the idea of screwing around with my hormones...I already
screw around with my brain chemicals with all these drugs.
Anyway, I use a diaphragm. There have also been times I've
used the Sympto Thermal method. It's a natural method of birth control,
but if it's done correctly it's as effective as the pill. You can
get books about it at the library if you're curious.

Thanks to all of you who replied. I'm going to make an appointment with my doctor and get an IUD or diaphragm fitted. My cat got hit by a car today and will be lucky to make a full recovery. But after that happens, I'll be back on track. Thanks for reminding me. :-)
