Possible seizure while on Wellbutrin Lexapro

Posted by Gilmore on June 19, 2003, at 8:38:17

I recently experienced a spell of disorientation, delirium, vacillating pupil diameter, and numbness in my arms. I was hospitalized for six hours before these symptoms passed, and I have no memory at all of anything occuring between ten minutes prior to this event and just before my discharge from hospital.

I take 300mg of Wellbutrin and 20mg of Lexapro daily. Have any of you heard of a similar experience possibly related to these medications? I am still undergoing tests for diagnosis of this seizure-like event and would appreciate any insight. Thanks.

What did the prescribing doctor (pdoc?) say about the event? Did you stop any of the meds? What did the ER docs tell you when they let you out?

The ER doctors gave me toxicology & blood tests, an EKG, and a CT scan. They found no indications of the origin of the altered mental status (no cerebral bleeding or tumors detected). My prescribing doctor has referred me to a neurologist and scheduled me for an electroencephalogram (EEG). I am continuing to take the same medications because they work and have not given any trouble over the past nine months. Plus, remaining on them for the EEG will maintain some conditions that were present at the time of the event. At this point most indications are of a seizure, but what set it off is most unclear.

Did any doctor tell you that there is high incidence of seizures from Wellbutrin? I had one and had to stop taking the med.

I had read a fair number of articles that examined the incidence of seizures among participants in bupropion studies. The rate seems well within the acceptable range for a drug that can confer so many benefits. A recurrence of the event I experienced, however, would cause me to look to other medications.

Are you serious? 4 out of 1000 people will have a seizure. It's actually probably higher than that because they are not reported.

Not to be doom and gloom, but if the Wellbutrin DID give you seizure, you will probably have another sooner or later. And who knows when that will happen. You could be behind the wheel of a car and injure other people.

Sorry to be so blunt, but it's not just your welfare at stake here.

Good luck.
