Parnate and Insomnia

Posted by MysteryMonk on June 18, 2003, at 4:32:08

For those of you who are suffering from insomnia while taking Parnate, are you getting adequate amounts of sleep? By virtue of being unemployed, I am able to sleep late enough to get about 8 hours of sleep, it just means that I don't wake up till 11 am or so. My problem seems to be that I can't fall asleep at night, but I don't have too much of a problem staying asleep once I get there. Is this at all similar to anyone elses experience?

The way it always was with me was that I'd call it "reduced need for sleep," rather than insomnia. Maybe I'm just playing with words, but I didn't experience any tossing and turning and the classic frustrations of insomnia. I just felt I could stay up real late like a night owl and get up after only 5 hours or so and not feel sleep-deprived.

Yeah, but for me, it took an act of God to keep me up during the day without taking any naps--which made me not sleepy at night, etc....what a shitty cycle.

Same here. I am overcome with sleepiness during the late afternoon and have to make a tremendous effort to stay awake. I usually lose the battle and end up napping for an hour or so. Klonopin helps me fall asleep at night, but then i wake several times during the night and am tossing and turning. Like you said, its a cycle. How does one overcome the daytime sleepiness short of having someone blow an airhorn while slapping you silly? Ideas anyone?

Yeah, that has been my problem too. I am so tired during the day and just can't stay awake no matter how hard I try, the urge is just so strong.

And how long have those of you experiencing daytime fatigue been taking Parnate? I have heard that the fatigue can wear off after a while.

I have been on it for about 3 months now. I think someone posted it takes as long as 6 months, but that it does get better. Let's hope.
